Jeff, I notice that Mikey calls you "Helms" all the time....

If you've ever wondered why, here's a coupl'a pictures that are a mainstay of every childhood memory of kids who grew up in southern California.... It's from the day when the "Helmsman" from Helm's Bakery Co. would roll through our neighborhoods selling breads and sweets of every descrption from the back of his truck....

Housewives who needed bread or baked goods delivered to their doors on a specific day would put a cardboard sign ("H") in their window to signal the Helmsman that he should ring the front doorbell.... You can see and example above the big "magic: drawers in the photo..

Those drawers rolled out about 2 1/2 miles long and contained all the treats of the day...from "dots" to "nikl nips" (little wax bottles with flavored syrup inside) to every description of donuts, krullers and baked goods known to man.....

All of Helms products were the real shit.....

Being on the East coast I'm not familiar with the Helmsman. However I do know about the Good Humor icecream man. On hot summer days there was no better sound then those bells coming up the street and the distinctive clunk of the refrigerator door.

My grandfather ran a vending machine route for a while. I was able to ride with him a time or two. The inside of his van was magic to the senses. All the different sweet smells mixing and swirling around.

Yup, lotsa memories there.........

I was trying to find the orginal music that Good Humor played....

Nowadays everyone uses the Scott Joplin tune that was used as the theme for "The Sting"......... but that isn't it......

When I was very young I remember the original open cab Ford refrigerator trucks coming around just ringing the row of bells mounted over the windshield.

Later I remember a distinctive tune also but haven't had any luck finding it. Ah! Is this it? http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=bDXL90KXPHQ

There was also a local farmer that came around and sold vegetables, eggs and other farm raised things out of his van. I think he would even kill a chicken for you but I never witnessed that.

You guys must have a few years on me. I grew up in the era of refrigeration. Window A/C units and all. We were on a central steam heat system. Sometime in Oct. the super would crank up the steam generator that fed heat to all the rowhomes in our court.

Actually I can't remember who called me Helms, here, first... It was either Jerry or Mikey:) After calling Jerry on it one night and stating I really do hate being called Helms because it reminds me a Jesse Helms, who I really can not stand, Jerry pointed me in the Helms bakery direction and after doing my own research on it I was completely fine with being the donut man:D

Going through life with the last name I have, I have always gotten called Helms which at times annoys me, but I know you guys here say it with respect, or something else:eek: Just don't confuse me with a unreconstructed Southern conservative...

Thanks for the post Tim... I grew up mostly on the east coast after being born in the pineapple patches of Hawai'i... So I could never experience Helms, I do remember getting milk everyday from the milk man tho:)

Mickey, Mikey:dontknow: All the same small peckered rodents:D

If I knew mickey hurt your feelings I would have said it more:D I'm joking of course....

I do know the helms thing mickey and you nor anyone else has said anything that got me all ass hurt... Maybe pissed off, but never hurt:)

You and Tim know I respect the heck out of you all.

I've been not posting so much because there is so much football on I can't stand it:D When I'm watching college ball I can't do much of anything but drink and remember the college days watching games in Lane Stadium and not remembering the end of the game:eek:
