Yesterday the Senate voted on a proposed Constitutional amendment to ban flag burning. As an amendment it required a 2/3 vote rather than the standard majority vote. The amendment came very, very close to passing in the Senate, falling short by just one vote. There were 3 Republican Senators among the scores of Democratic Senators that voted against the amendment. The list of Senators that voted against the amendment reads like a list of Fidel Castro for President cheerleaders, Biden, Boxer, Clinton (the Hilla Monster), Feingold, Kennedy, Kerry, Leahy, Shumer, etc., etc.. The funny thing is, I agree with this group this time around, which very nearly makes me sick to my stomach.
We don’t need any new laws that infringe upon our 1st amendment rights or any of the rights afforded by the Bill of Rights. I must admit that I cringe every time that I see someone desecrate the flag of this county, but not nearly as bad as I cringe when I hear about politicians using these emotions to further their own cause. This is nothing but a political ploy put into motion by the GOP to increase the turnout of conservative voters this fall. I find it much more offensive than the actual desecration of the flag that these so called “leaders” of our country would use it to for political gain.
I served my country in the United States Marine Corps, the entire country. Not just the ones that I agree with or that agree with me. This means that I was fighting to preserve the rights of all, and that includes the right to burn our country’s flag. That is what separates us from so many other lands, the ability to speak your mind, even if it is not a popular message that you are trying to relay. In reality our flag is nothing but a piece of cloth, that is all that is being burned. The “soul” of the flag, for lack of a better word, lies within each and every one us. That cannot be desecrated or destroyed.
So go ahead and hold your rallies and burn your flags. But be warned that even though I support your right to do so, it would probably be best if you didn’t do it in my front yard. I’m just not so sure I could stand idly by and watch it happen. That is my right.
