Too much oil

So, oil changed at the dealership and what do I find underneath my truck, yep oil spots, 4 of 'em :mad: Checked my dipstick and the oil level is well over the safe mark and my bill showed 11 qts of oil. I've heard that the manual had a misprint and only about 8 1/2 qts of oil are needed, even with a filter change.
What problems/concerns, if any, should I be concerned with when there is too much oil in these motors?
I plan on draining some of it out tonight, having a look under the truck and I made an appointment with the dealership wed. morning. I'd hate to have the same indiviudals working on my truck again but they will honor the warranty if there's any problems. I'm sure there are past threads regarding this so feel free to put up the links as I want to have all the info I can in my hands when I go in on wed. Thanks for the help.
 
Yeah it should be about 8.5 quarts of oil are needed. Good luck with visit the dealership again and have them change whole oil AGAIN with 8.5 quarts for free! :D
 
The rear seal is probley TOAST. :mad:

My Dad tried to argue with me last time he "helped" me change the oil in my truck.... He said that it took 12 qrts. The manual says so. :rolleyes: We called 2 of the local dealers in Orlando, and one said 11 quarts and the other said 9 1/2 quarts. :mad: I put in 8 1/2 and it was full after oil and filter change.

If the bastards put too much oil in your truck, and you drive it for any length of time unchecked.... the excess pressure will blow out every seal in the motor. Good luck, but it sounds like that has already started. :( Take the truck BACK to them and shove it up their ASS.... SIDEWAYS. :mad:
 
Do not drain the oil yourself and have it towed to the dealer, do not drive it. That way they will not be able to say that it was a typo on the 11 quarts of oil and not cover the damage they caused.

Just out of curiousity, how far did you drive it with it overfilled?

Really?? I would be pissed off if they said that to me and wont do anything at all!

I've never ever heard of any seals failing due to too much oil except in a boxer style motor. the crankshaft will be slushing in it but that's about it unless I'm missing something.

just drain out a few quarts or have jiffy lube do it. They always put 8.5 qts in like their computer says :)

I'm not an expert on this, but I have been present when racing Vipers were being oiled...and they intentionally added two quarts over the full mark...could have been a different oiling system...

Race Cars usually have different oil pans/ sump systems.... that could have been for any of a myriad of reasons.... maybe a remote oil filter system as well. :dontknow:

I'm sure they were dry sump systems.
 
I've driven it several hundred miles already. This is the 2nd time the dealership has changed the oil and the first time they added 11 qts and I had no leaks of any kind.

Yep... VERY worried at this point.

Have it TOWED to the dealer. Actually, have it towed to a DIFFERENT dealer in your area. I hope to God it isn't something serious.
 
Been there done that...idiot's.... and it did cost me a rear seal... never had them touch the truck again... make them make it right:mad:
I took the truck to ROE and had them do the rear seal, as I will NEVER let that dealer touch my truck again.

I'll go with Black1 and Prof on this. I just took my 05 QC in for it's first service. The dealer initially showed 11 quarts of 5W30 on the invoice, but they were confusing it with the Viper. The motor in my 05 QC calls for 9 quarts of 0W40. As for blowing seals...where else is that 2 quarts of oil going to go!
 
O.K., this had me perplexed as I knew I had read that my '06 took 10 quarts according to the owners manual. I just got it out and verified "10 quarts with filter". I have changed it once and the level read fine. It still does.

So BlackKnight, you have an '06 it should take 10 quarts. I can't speak to what the differences are from '04 to '06. I know there's a big cast oil pan under my engine.

Finally, too much oil will not build oil pressure. It may allow oil to linger in areas where it doesn't normally stick around, but will not build pressure. Think about it, does the sump care if it is submerged in 8 quarts or 12? No.

The problem with too much oil is that the crank will churn the oil and create extreme foaming. This ultimately makes the engine work harder because the crank has to move through a puddle of oil. Additionally, there is a risk of sucking air into the oil passages, not a desireable situation.

Drive the truck back to the dealer and ask why they chose to put 11 quarts into the vehicle. Then tell them to find out where it is leaking from. They obviously aren't that bright, they may have just spilled oil and it is dripping.

Curious, what does your dipstick read currently? They weren't trying to bone you for an extra quart were they?

I got my oil changed last thursday so if the drops on my garage floor were from oil that was spilled on the engine/frame/other areas I would've seen it that night but I didn't. I only work 10 miles from my place but I drove almost 300 miles this weekend going out of town, parked it last night and this morning was when I saw spots. Having it towed to the dealership tomorrow morning just to be safe and hope to get a good luck underneath to see if any oil residue is on any part of the truck not nearby the motor or drain plug. I'll let you know what I find out.
