Train hitting car

Guys I was at work the other day following a couple trains and some motorist got hit by a train at a Railroad Crossing. I heard the whole thing on the radio and that is one thing I never want to happen in my career. As some of you know I'm a conductor on a major railroad. I feel alot of people don't understand how long it takes to get a speeding frieght train to stop or slow down. The train that hit the pickup was going 50 MPH and put the guy in the pickup was killed instantly. So slow down and take a moment out of your busy scedule to wait for the train I know I may sound like I'm preaching but that's one thing about my job that scares me to death walking back to see if people are alive after hitting a car. Stop and listen to the horn at the crossing there should be 2 long whistle blows 1 short and another long.


Now go out and have fun!
 
I forgot to add when I was listening to the report on the radio the dispatcher said "I just sent the paramedics" and the conductor said "you better just have them bring a body bag" The guy that was killed had 6 children...
 
You never mess with the train................gross tonage rule is always in effect!!

On a good note I grew up with trains horns in the distance. I love the sound of their horns at night. That was the sound of warm weather, with the windows open at night.

Obviously I can stop a big truck quicker than a train, but it's the same idea. People put their lives in my hands every single day, and thankfully so far I've been able to stop or avoid them. Everyone is always in such a hurry they don't realize what could happen. :dontknow:
 
The the trains that I'm on when they're loaded are anywhere from 17,000 tons to 19,000 tons...and are over a mile long..
 
The train will ALWAYS come out on top!! Been several people here killed thinking they could beat the train across the tracks.:(
Kinda like walking up to Mikey and bitch slapping him............might take him a while to "stop".:D And thay may find body parts scattered about!:D
 
Well at least the retard made the stupid decision...unlike the parents that left the 18 month old un attended in the bathtub for a half hour... the kid had no choice.

Loosing a kid blows....

At 50 MPH and with this tonage, on a rough calculation I believe it would take the train about 2 to 2.5 miles to come to a complete stop and this is using the emergency stop, which is not the safest way to stop a train.
 
The guy that got hit was with a empty... it was about 2,500 tons...or around there.
 
This has put many conductors in a state of severe stress when they realize they can not stop!! This can put so much stress on the individual they can actually have a heart attack!

Same thing with ships, once you get (50,000 tons +)them going they need about 5 miles to stop depending on the speed. Many Ship Captains and Harbour Pilots have had heart attacks while having to watch there vessel plummet into whatever is in there path and have very little or no course of action to take!!

It's even worse than that, my Wifes Uncle drives an 18 Wheeler and has told me stories that has made me literally sick.

It seems that people will apply the handling characteristics of the vehicle they drive to everything else out there and it really doesn't seem to matter who or what.

Last time he was in town, he told me that to often people in smaller cars will speed up, duck in front of a Semi and slam on the brakes just to save themselves 60' in a line of cars. And this very thing had just happened, several hundred yards in front of him, he could see it happening and what the result was going to be. A lady in a small car (now about 3 feet long and about 8 feet tall) ducked between two 18 Wheelers that were breaking for traffic. He said the two Semi's would have probably hit anyway, but with light damage. The car became a pillow between the two trucks, because there was not much damage to the two trucks, but the car....... and the occupant paid dearly for that 60 feet.

So as we are out there, lets not just watch out for trains, but on the whole, for each other. Seems not to matter if its an Aircraft Carrier or a 19 foot long Pickup, some idiot is going to think you can stop, because they could. Be careful out there gang.

And Wizzy, I PROMISE never to play chicken with a train, but I was having fun with one from BNSF the other day out by the Great Salt Lake. Man, them horns are LOUD!

Damn BNSF I hate that company... oh yeah that's who signs my pay check I better be nice... lol okay okay I hate UP :D Yeah I'm still trying to find out how much PSI those horns push...
