Updating Stock Sound System

I am in the physical process of updating my sound system in my 05 RC SRT-10. I purchased an RB-1 to replace my RB-4 so that I can still have NAV and use of an IPOD using the Mopar IPOD integration kit while still keeping a factory look at the dash. I have also planned on using two after market amps to power a new set of componets up front (Door and Dash) and another to power a sub in the rear. I have a total of 5 speakers (Two door, two dash, and one sub).

I removed the stock amp (very small and a pain in the ass to remove I must say) and am in the process of doing my homework on the wiring coming out of the RB-1/RB-4 that follows the factory harness to the factory infinity amp. To my surprise there is only two speaker outputs that come out of the RB-1 and RB-4 (Right rear and Left rear) that go into the factory amp. That tells me that the amp controls all the fade control and balance control from the head unit, I assume the PCI bus wire somehow sends data to the amp to control fade and balance. I will be losing my ability to fade since the amp controls those features and it no longer exists, no biggie read on.

I am adding a low level converter (Converts high level signal out of the radio to a low level signal that comes out of an RCA jack) to the two speaker outputs that would have gone into the amp. From there I will be splitting the signal at the converter via 2 RCA "Y" adaptors that will then go to my external amps mounted under the seats. Each amp will have to be tuned via the gains to allow for proper sound fill for the front components and the rear sub.

I wanted to post this as I have done alot of research on our stock systems to find out the best way to still keep the stock head unit and incorporate a better sound. I will say that this whole process is more in depth than I expected out of a simple radio and amp install and would recommend that you stick with the stock system or replace the entire system using an aftermarket unit.

I still don't know how its going to sound so I will keep everyone posted, it should sound 10 times better than the stock even with a reduction in speakers. My goal here is to have better sound and still keep the factory unit while using as much of the stock wiring as possible.

FYI.....If you plan on just upgrading from an RB-4 to an RB-1 and want to keep your RB-4 Nav antenna in one piece you must remove the lower glove box plastic assembly that goes from the passenger side of the truck to the drivers steering column area. After that you must remove the stock amp to gain access to three clips that hold the RB-4 Nav antenna wiring up in the dash. One clip toward the front of dash took me over an hour and a few bloody knuckles to remove. Once the RB-4 Nav antenna is out the RB-1 antenna is a breeze to install.

Update. The RB-1 does have front left and right outputs but are not physically pinned out in the SRT-10 harness. If you wanted to use all four speaker outputs from the RB-1 or RB-4 minus the amp you would need to purchase a new harness from Metra (www.metraonline.com) model number 71-6502-1 that would allow you to utilize the pinouts out of the back of the radio rather than the SRT-10 harness that does not have the pinouts physically there.

I'm curious about your iPod integration. I'm told (Best Buy installers and Crutchfield's web site) that none of the '05 head units have an input for audio in, so the iPod cannot be connected to it. Do you know a way for me to integrated an iPod and keep my factory head unit. I am very happy with the sound - a rare unit that works great.:D I prefer the keep the factory look to deter theft. Best Buy said I need a new unit (with audio in) and an adapter and even then I may not have full featured controls through the steering wheel.

Any suggestions? Thanks in advance!:p

V102G0, which radio do you have? The only radio you can not add ipod integration into for the SRT-10 is the RB-4. Other than that mopar does make an adaptor that will work for IPOD integration. Cost for the kit is $145.00 plus shipping plus the cost of the IPOD, but having your entire song library handy is priceless in my book. The kit allows you to use your stock controls to control your IPOD and also displays the song title on the screen, no matter which radio you have, except the RB-4. I bought an RB-1 that still has NAV and allows me to do the above. It cost me a bunch but it was alot cheaper than going the aftermarket route with NAV and possibly spending more to keep my steering wheel controls which are also priceless.

I am learning to much about our audio system very quickly and I can say we got short changed from dodge. I used to install car stereos professionally for 5 years and I wish manufactors would keep it simple for those who wish to upgrade their systems, even as a trained installer I still find factory systems that stump me and the systems in our trucks make no damn since to me why dodge did what they did. Let me know if that answered your question.

P.S. its typical for crutchfield and installers from retail stores to say what they said to you because they don't like dealing with stock amplified systems. I used to stay away from systems like ours back in the day because its to complex when you deal with multiple amps and possible major rewires. As for the IPOD integration kit this kit is straight from MOPAR and is a plug and play kit except for models that are previous to the 02 model year and of course the current RB-4.

No audiofile here...so, how do I find out if I have an RB-4?

The model designation will be on the front of the unit. I have the RB4 and the Mopar iPod integration kit that is now useless. Still in the box. Anybody want to buy it?
I'm not going to fork out more $$ for an RB1.

OO-OO - I can answer this one :p
It's imprinted on the bottom left corner of the radio - in front.

I have the RBG radio. Do you know if your kit will work on my radio? If so I'll take it. Please PM me with info and price. Thanks!

I have the RBG radio.

RBG radio will work fine with the IPOD integration kit. You can find the IPOD integration kit on E-Bay for around $145.00 or help a member out and purchase it from the guy on here who says he has one for sale. Enjoy!

The nav unit is the RB4 except for 06's. They got the RB1. If you have the 6 disc changer then I don't know what you have.

any body have info on this? ipod intergration for this particular one:dontknow:

If you have an 06 that also will allow for IPOD integration kit. The only radio the integration kit will not work with in our trucks is the RB-4. Other than that you are golden to order and install the kit.
