Upper n Lower Bushing Removal

FOr those who have the energy suspension upgraded bushings.

How the hell did you get the old ones out?

Tricks, tips welcomed.

OOps this is for both the upper & lower front a arm/control arms.

think Dodge changed the style of bushin. the instructions show a different "easier" kind.

on the lowers i just set the rubber on fire with a torch, both sides of the stock bushin. kept a bucket of water close. just before it shoots the sleeve out of the rubber, it sends out blue flame jets. so be careful. peel out the rubber that is left behind in the shell & run a wire brush throught it to make it clean & smooth.

was not crazy about fire one the uppers. but no longer than it takes might be worth a try. took a hole saw & drilled through the rubber, with a bunch of oil. cleaned the sleeves off on a wire wheel & the wire brushed the shells.

NOTE: make sure that the shells are out far enough to hold the bushins like they should be.
had to move ALL the shells on mine out or about a quarter of the bushin was still showin when i got her back together

Shooting blue flame. I work around flammable liquids as it is. I dont think i want jets of blue anything let alone flame. LOL

Got to be an easier way. Please tell me there is.

thats the way i did mine.

tried to press them out. had some serious pressure & was scared that something would break or bend.

maybe someone can suggest a mo better way

Ah.

Well if a hacksaw blade fits in the hole, you could take the bushings out in pieces. It's alot cleaner than melting them out!

I think that is doable. Seems simple enough. Better than having blue flames in the shop. LOL

I've done poly a-arm bushings on other cars before and have always had the best results using a small burns-o-matic torch. This method is used for poly bushings where the outer sleeve stays in the a-arm and is reused. Here's how I do it:

1. Remove the a-arm from the vehicle
2. Use the torch to heat the smaller diameter inner sleeve (the one that the a-arm bolt passes through) first. Have a screw driver or some other poker handy and wait for the sleeve to come up in temperature so that it starts to melt the rubber touching the sleeve. When it starts to sound like frying bacon, use the screwdriver to push on the inner sleeve. If it doesn't move, heat it up some more. When it's ready it will pop right out of the bushing fairly easily.
3. Next start to heat the outer bushing sleeve shell until the rubber of the bushing starts to get hot enough to separate from the sleeve. Just like the inner sleeve, it will start to sizzle as it comes up to temperature. Periodically try pushing on the rubber to see if it is ready to pop out of the sleeve--before too long it will pop out.

This is kind of messy and it stinks of burning rubber but can be done easily and with a minimum of drama. Use common sense and have a bucket of water handy to cool things or in case something goes south.

thats a neat little idea that ROZ posted.
but it looks like its more for the whole bushin replacement.

we have to reuse the shells.

so the torch still looks like the best route, imvho of course.
