Dear Fellow Enthusiast,

As a SEMA Member Company, we have received an Urgent Legislative Action Alert from the association. You may be interested in this legislative alert and the possible impact it will have on your hobby.

The following information is directly from SEMA. If you would like to contact the lawmaker, follow the instructions in the alert.

Thank you for your time,
Your Friends at Summit Racing Equipment

Washington lawmakers are drafting a large economic stimulus package to help create jobs and rebuild infrastructure. They want to include a nationwide scrappage program which would give U.S. tax dollars to consumers who turn-in older cars to have them crushed, as a misguided attempt to spur new car sales. The lawmakers need to scrap this idea.

The stimulus package is being drafted right now. House Speaker Nancy Pelosi (D-CA) (What a surprize!)wants to introduce the bill on January 6 and have it approved by Congress by January 20, so that President Obama can sign it into law after he is inaugurated.

Contact House Speaker Nancy Pelosi IMMEDIATELY To Oppose Cash for Clunkers!

Talking Points
Feel free to use any of the statements below as a starting point for your message to Speaker Pelosi.

I am [calling/writing] to urge lawmakers not to include a “Cash for Clunkers†provision in the economic stimulus bill. Owners who turn in vehicles for crushing would receive a "minimal" payment to purchase a new car. This is a misguided attempt to spur car sales and claim that the country’s air quality or fleet fuel mileage is being improved.

I work for [company name] located in [city and state]. My company is part of the specialty automotive industry, an industry which enables consumers to enhance their vehicle’s appearance, performance, comfort, convenience and safety. “Cash for Clunkers†programs deny our small businesses the availability of older cars necessary to develop and market their products and services. The programs will hurt my company and our customers.

“Cash for Clunkers†programs threaten enthusiasts nationwide with the loss of valuable parts and parts-cars for repair, restoration, and customization projects. The programs also risk destroying classic, historic and special-interest vehicles, our American heritage.

Cars turned in for scrappage often barely run, or are rarely-driven second or third vehicles that have a minimal impact on overall fuel economy or emissions.

“Cash for Clunkers†programs will reduce the availability of affordable transportation and repair parts used by low-income drivers. It will also compete with the Salvation Army, the Purple Heart and other charities that rely on vehicle donations to raise money.

“Cash for Clunkers†ignores better policy options. If Congress wants to act, support for repair and upgrade is a better choice and a win-win for consumers, dealers, manufacturers and repair shops. Significant emissions and fuel economy improvements can be achieved in older vehicles through relatively simple and inexpensive means: repaired/replaced exhaust systems, tune-ups, etc.

We hope we can count on you to reject “Cash for Clunkers.†Thank you for your consideration on this very important matter.

Don't know if that will happen or not. It was predicted decades ago that if the brain dead ever gained the majority in this country other means which are referred to in the Constitution and the Federalist Papers would have to be implemented to correct the situation.

That is the reason there used to be standards to vote in addition to just age and the ability to produce carbon dioxide!:ridinghorse: :fight:

Never in my worst of nightmares would I have thought and send an email to Pelosi. But I just did.

I have 2 F150's and a TR7 that I have stripped everything useful out of. I was going to take them to the scrap yard when I have time, but I may wait and see what the government will buy them for...I have titles.

i think he is completly wrong:dontknow:

for one, i dont think anyone is going to take a "classic' and have it crushed,

but for one , i do think there are tons of K cars by dodge, pintos, vegas, chevettes, and numerous others that need to be strippen from the land, and if the government is going to give a stimulous for that , i think its great:rock:

how many times have you passed someoens yard and seen an old chevy citation or buick skylark hidden in the bushes?

I think it would not only do some good economy wise, but also clean up a littel of america.

I jsut dont see many people out there taking a hurst olds, or a nice impala or a 32 ford body to the crusher.

but I am sure there will be a few nice classics go to the burner, but all in all i think its a good thing

There was a lot of talk about this at the SEMA show in November. What really has everyone concerned is this may become MANDATORY owners must turn in vehicles for crushing"

Call me crazy, but I'm not seeing how they can make it mandatory for people to turn-in a piece of their property. Hell, if they come knocking on my door saying I have to turn in the 69 Continental I'll tell them where they can put it.

i agree, if and thats a huge IF, they tried to make it mandatory it would never stick, there are too many folks with 100 thousand dollar rides that just wouldnt give them up, and it would be unconsitutional for them to do so.

i still think they are doing a good thing,

there is no way that i see that they could make someone actually crush there rides.

if they tried, there would be such a large upraising that the president to be, would quickly repeal it

It will really depend on what price the "stimilus" will be for turning in your car. Even if it passes you still have the choice to turn it in. If you get $500 to crush your car but you can sell it for a $1000, why would you do it? It would have to be very inviting for anyone to take advantage of it.

Something that occured to me is the fact that if this law had been passed in 1973 to about 1982 or so there would probably be only a hand full of 60's or early 70's muscle cars in existance right now. During those years the only cars considered collectable were Duesenburgs and similar types. Muscle cars were a dime a dozen because of the gas and insurance situation. I thought I was lucky as heck to get $2,500.00 for my totally cherry 428CJ Mustang convertible in 1978. In about 1975 the service station owner near my house had a 68 or 69 HEMI Road Runner that he would pull out to the street during business hours with a sign asking $3,000.00 and it just sat so he started marking it down. The last time I looked at it he had $2,000.00 on the sign, but with gas going for .50-.60 cents a gallon and insurance high as hell nobody wanted it.
