Silly question again...

What is the difference between the VEC upgrade and a chip flash? Going for my first real upgrade.

Seth

Seth, two different ways to accomplish engine management. The VEC III is a piggyback to the PCM (where the 'chips' are). The VEC III is a programmable box that does not change the chips in the pcm, it alters the parameters that control engine performance.

Flashing the pcm permanently alters the characteristics of the variables controlling engine performance. There are advantages and disadvantages to both techniques. To understand the pro's and con's of each, do a search...and learn...

Depending on how far you want to modify your truck. With mild mods (intake headers, cam) a flash is more than sufficient.

Once you go into heavy mods (s/c, turbo, engine work) having a VEC would be almost a necessity to fine tune your needs. Hope this helps.

for now go with the flash, later you can sell it if you mod more.

basically the flash bumps up stock settings

the vec has to be tuned on a dyno
