I am pretty certain he shifted twice... obviously started in 1st, 2nd as he approached 1/3rd track, and 3rd gear as he approached rougly 2/3rd track. I watched is several times... and heard 2 very distinct shifts...
Powerglide deal. It's a fullout race car. This is the fastest time for a viper. However, UG holds the records for an IRS (independent rear suspension) 6 speed car at 7.98 183mph. The fastest auto car was 7.99 and the fastest 6 speed car outside of this ons is way back in the 8.70's I think.
The car you saw is a dedicated race car with unreal workminship. It looks awesome. It's a stock block, stock crank, 510" with striker heads and twin 76's. He was running 20lbs of boost, with the ability to run 30+. That was their first time down the track.
At that level, it isn't about making power as much as it is hooking it up.
I had to listen to it a couple times with my eyes closed to pick it up. I believe what sounds like the first shift is in reality the tires hooking up and the rpms dropping down a little, not a shift.
May have a turbo 400 or torqueflite in it. There is a doctor in Louisiana that runs a Torqueflite from a Cummins Diesel in his Viper. They have the same bellhousing, he runs low 9's.
