What to do :dontknow: ??? install it or not :confused: ?? K&N is better ?

I've bought it with the magnaflow catback. And ready to install it.

Also because, the original sound....... well, seems to be a battery vehicle :mad:

This from the NFFF site. Some people disagreed, others believed it. You can make up your own mind.

Shawn (Iltemprd) collected the data, and I crunched the numbers.

Ram Air Test Results
________________________________________
Okay Ladies and Gentlemen, here are the results of the Ram Air flow tests that Shawn ran for the group.

First off I want to once again thank Shawn and his friends for taking the time to do this for the group, it’s greatly appreciated.

This is the data that was supplied to me. I’m only going to re-type the pertinent data as Temperature, Humidity, etc. are not really important to the outcome.

4th Gear FPM FPM
MPH Throttle Open Throttle Closed

35 1600 1500

45 1800 1700

55 2150 2000

65 2400 2350

75 2450 2400

Okay, that’s the data. Now we will convert the test speed MPH to Feet per Minute (FPM)

35MPH = 3080FPM

45MPH = 3960FPM

55MPH = 4840FPM

65MPH = 5720FPM

75MPH = 6600FPM

You will notice at this point that at all test speeds, the Throttle Open FPM’s do not come close to the test speed FPM’s. The following data is the percentages of Throttle Open v/s Test Speeds

35MPH – 1600/3080 = 52.0%

45MPH – 1800/3960 = 45.5%

55MPH – 2150/4840 = 44.4%

65MPH – 2400/5720 = 42.0%

75MPH – 2450/6600 = 37.1%

What this is showing is that the faster you go, the less Ram Air effect you have. Also the delta air flows between Throttle Open and Throttle Closed are minimal, and with the exception of the 55MPH data, indicate that the engine is drawing more air from the grill intake portion of the system as speed increased.

Shawn attempted a number of times to post the video he sent me. Needless to say I’m terminally stupid when it comes to computers, so I cannot do this either. However after viewing the video it supports the findings above. The ribbons attached around the intake area of the hood are shown to be lifting off of the hood surface. This indicates that the air is rising off this area and going over the hood scoop, not into it.

Well, I’m sure this is going to start some lively debates so let me know if you have any questions or find any errors in what I found. After all, I’m only a trained ape and do make mistakes.

Thanks again Shawn.

.

thats sound strange...... so what is the use of the scoop ?

Maybe I can install only the box w/o the piece that goes to the hood scoop :dontknow:

BAH skip the volant and k and n, and take that 250-300 bucks and put it towards a paxton :) That be what im doing.

the scoop is set to far back and does not take in very much air. It does allow heat to escape from the motor though. The only gains from the aftermarket intakes is noise.

Looks/sounds like the Volant works well at lower speeds (pseudo-normal driving around town). That might help with MPG a little.

Isn't there a secondary intake section with the Volant system? Sort of like it's own CAI?

yes there is. there is a whole in the airbox that is right behind the grill

Save the money and get an Air raid drop in filter from our vendor Premier Accessories. Pm him for member pricing. Better value IMO.

As far as the K&N CAI vs K&N drop in, we didn't see a difference on the dyno. Both gained about 6 Hp / 7 Trq over stock box and stock filter. :burnout:

*Limited test due to on the dyno and no high flow air to the CAI (just a good shop fan). :dontknow:

Nevertheless, being an Aero Eng by background, air starts to be compressable at 0.7 Mach, so unless we are driving around 537 MPH we are not compressing air. Getting colder air and not hot air from the engine - YES, but not compressing it.
:stupido:

I would agree for the money, get the drop-in.

here is my dyno with the volant cai and magnaflo exhaust. quad cab

we didnt put a fan in front of the intake and i believe it was around82-86 degrees outside. the dyno was done on a dyno jet

Ditto Premier and the drop in.

David is a class guy and he actually dyno`d a Volant.Maybe he will see this and post up the dyno sheets.

I hope we aren't going down this road again :dontknow: It got a bit ugly on the "other" site comparing all these. Bottom line....none of them make much hp. I have the volant and I don't think I lost power, but I also have snorkled the hole in the front of the volant box to also direct air in as a third inlet source(straight the front grill). I would probably go with a drop in if I were to make the choice today. save your money.

Sounds good.:rock: Noticeable(is that a word?) SOTP difference at 30+MPH.:rock: Gives me an excuse to shave off the scoop grill.:rock: And a beeeeg cotton-gauze filter.:rock: I got mine, I like it, and you can't have it!:aetsch::thefinger::aetsch::thefinger::aetsch:

Same your money and buy either a K&N or Air Raid drop in replacement filter.

Sooooooooooooooo. How do people like their Volant Intake.:confused: :dontknow: ;) :D :p

Good replies Jack and Patrick.:rock: :rock: :rock: :rock:

I would rate it a 6 out of 10. And that score is mostly due to initial fitment issues, poor(lack of any) customer service on the part of Premier and that it overall didn't dyno out as claimed(which I didn't really believe, but it's still false advertising and should be discouraged). :D

Oh, and yes. Thank you to all those whom created and support this site. You all ROCK!

That is a great question - I have a Volant. Problem is, it is still NIB, so I don't know!!! :dontknow: My volant guy is a little slow.:rolleyes:

When you guys get it all figured out, lemme know if I should have him do the install ............... ;) :D
