OK im brand new here i was told this was the place to be for owners. I just traded in my hemi ram reg cab racer for a srt 10 and love it but i want to drag race and am researching putting in an racing automatic trans instead of the six speed for more constant shift point racing and plus it will most likely help since i drive it when i can and the traffic is already killing me..... I know im going to get shi* for this but im a firm believer in an automatic trans for drag racing. Has anyone here done this or know any information that could help seriously???? I have a 2004 reg cab if you cant figure that out by what i said i really need help, i know mad dog trans has a good trans but as far as the rest of what i need i really need some help! and yes i am going to supercharge after the auto trans lol
 
It *is* possible to put an auto trans in a RC.
However,
It is *not* cheap.
It is *not* easy.
It is *not* a quick installation.

There are a ton of factors to consider, including all the interior mods necessary, computer swaps, driveshaft changes, etc. There's a long list.

Price? No clue. I'd guess somewhere around $10K with all the parts.
Time? No clue their either. A month of downtime? If it gets worked on every day....3 weeks?

I agree that an automatic is the way to go if you're strictly drag racing (or live in the NYC area). Nothing shifts as fast as an automatic transmission.

Do a couple of searches here and a little reading. You'll see some talk about it in the past.

Hopefully Fstjack will reply to this. He is putting a TH400 in his race truck.

Depending on what you are trying to achieve, you may not need to change out the computer/pcm. If you go with a manual shift auto it will not matter. Hell, the engine will still think it's a stick.

As Kevan said, this will not be cheap, but it can be done. What type of tranny were you considering?
 
Welcome, you will love it here. If you are really serious about this mod, you have a lot of planning to do before the change. Think about your ultimate goal and plan with that in mind. If this is going to be a street machine I would say don't do it. If it is going to be a truck you haul to the track, then the $10k for the auto is going to be minor compared to the other changes you will be making.

We would love to see an RC with an automatic...but think about what you want out of this ride first. You will be spending over $10k for the transmission without labor. A complete rear end will be required...another $4k, the supercharger and all of the attendant things...another $7k...and if you are going to do this you should also build the engine for this kind of use, pistons, rods, heads.....another $10k...safety mods, cage, drive shaft loops, fuel cell, etc...another $10k...(not to mention the trailer and the tow vehicle...and this is just the start...think you better get a sponsor...

Get ready bro...you will have a ball, it will take time, and the reality is that you will never be finished...it is a disease not a hobby.

Hope you decide to go for it...but the transmission change is just the tip of a very long dip stick!
 
learn to shift, real race cars have 3 pedals! You just need to take some time and learn how to drive these things.
 
yeah! manual is for a real man! and u can decide by yourself to shift at whatever rpm that u prefer instead let it decided by itself
 
scroll down it has a kit to install in our trucks, no cumputer needed.






#56V. We now have an adapter to install this transmission in a Dodge SRT10, 2 door pickup. Comes complete with bolts. Install one of our level 2, 3 or 4 automatic transmissions on your Viper motor. This is the adapter needed to use the #6B 10 inch to 12 inch torque converter. No computer needed. Cost $750.00

I know the stick i nice guys, im not saying i dont like a good hurst shifter anyday of the week but for consistancy i think the auto will be more proficient for what im looking to do, i see you have a hemi lol did you trade yours in to lol.

I sold the hemi before I bought this, I got an offer I couldn't refuse plus we couldn't find a trans that would handle the power. An auto is good, but I can be just as constant with the stick(btw the hurt shift sucks compared to the aftermarket stuff)

I was looking for a custom tranny from mad dog trans, i already talked to him he said he could beef up one of his high grade trannys for me for a really good price none the less. The one i was looking at was a stage 2 godfather but its rated around 800 hp and im looking for at least 1000 to be safe ya know.
 
i am at work(lol) so no aim here, I don't have a after market shift installed on mine, but there is a "reviews" section that has alot of good info. Plus GET A SHIFT LIGHT!! I just haven't had problems shifting, I don't think a shifter would helpme. But for the price you can't beat the site I gave you (if you go automatic). A friend of mine in GA used them and has had no problems.

Sounds like you will be needing to get in on the rear axle group purchase that Stinker has started. It's a sticky at the top of this section.

TOO LATE HA! would dive in to the group buy but just spent 3000 on the truck when buying it so im a little broke now saddly need to work lol.
