Washington DC - Arlington

My wife and I are spending the weekend in DC. We went to Arlington Cemetery today and caught the "Changing of the Guard" at the "Tomb of the Unknown Soldier". From what I understand, it is guarded 24/7. Even when Arlington is closed there is a guard walking his tour. After the changing today, they had a special presentation where a group of kids presented a wreath. They had additional guards and a bugler playing taps. These guys are presicion. Every movement is precise and executed exactly. Then a B-52 Stratofortress (accidently called it a B-1. Thanks Monkey) bomber flew overhead right on que. Choked me up. It was a very touching tribute to the men and women who have given the ultimate sacrifice for our country.

Cool man! i'm actually about 30 mins from DC! :rock: yeah changing of the guard
is a very good ceremony... i went there during the winter and watched it...
had to of been high thirties that day... :(

The plane in the picture is a B-52, not a B-1.

Still an impressive site.

I saw a show about that on the Travel Channel or Dicovery - can't remember?

They explained how it is considered a very high honor to ba a guard there. Also said how they tried to suspend guard detail during Hurricane Katrina, but the Guards chose to keep up their duties in honor of those who have died for this Country!:rock: :rock:

Yeah, your right. The B-1 is the swept wing bomber. I knew that but had a mental lapse. I'll blame it on the heat. Been sweatin' buckets it so humid. But I wouldn't have missed that presentation for anything. Thing is, we just happened to be at the right place at the right time. Knew nothing about it until it unfolded in front of us.

B-1, B-2, or B-52. It doesn't really matter if you are on the receiving end of what they are dropping. Any of them will ruin your day.

Oh man! You should know how much I agree with you!!

They should serve, especially those whiney snotty, wanna complain about everything, had everything given to them, granola eatin', dread-lock wearin', flag burnin' types. Make them appreciate what they really have!

And I think that their first tour of duty should be in some third-world country that doesn't have the nice things they are used to. Like food, democracy, and running water!
 
I'm about 3 hours from DC. Changing of the guard? Simply awesome, inspiring, reverent, and one of the few things that every living person in this country aught to have to see. And the Wall. Every time I go I cry at both. Just so powerful.


Proud to have served in the US Air Force for 22 years.

We should try and have a DC meet up some time. See the sites together.

I think it would be cool to have a large group of SRT-10s lining the National Mall. I'm up for it, then again...it's only a 20 minute drive for me. :D

Neat idea. If we can find a safe place to park all the Viper trucks. Maybe on the White house front lawn. Traffic and parking are a nightmare here. Unless someone has a secret they'd like to share. There are tour busses that follow a route around DC and you can hop off and back on the next one all day long till you see all the sights you want. Plan for spring or fall when the weather is a little cooler.

We ended up walking or taking the Metro Rail everywhere. Next time we come, we're getting a room closer to a Metro entrance.

We drove up to the zoo today. Saw a couple of Silverbacks relatives "gettin' it on". The primates in the other cages were glued to their bars watching them. Then went back down to the National Mall and saw the war memorials (WWII, Korean, Vietnam) and the Lincoln Memorial. I saw more than one guy not able to keep it together.
 
grew up in the DC area.silver spring md, spring field va, Vienna va.there is sooo much history there.Heading up that way in sept.to see the MX OF NATIONS and show the wife around DC.She has never been there.Cant wait.

We took this Trolley Tour. http://www.trustedtours.com/store/Old-Town-Trolley-C212.aspx Not only do they take you around and pick you up. (Trolley comes by about every 30 minutes.) but they also give you a lot of interesting info and history about different areas as they take you through them. One of the spots is the Washington National Cathedral http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Washington_National_Cathedral Holy cow! Pictures cannot do this place justice. The architecture and level of detail is incredible. We are coming back because this long weekend only allowed us to scape the surface.

The guards must be 5'11 to 6'4, all with a "30" inch waist. Guess that rules out most of this forum! ;)

Reminds me of when I used to live in the DC area.....agree, there is nothing like visiting the tomb of the unknown soldier.
