I AM CHANGING MY OIL FOR THE FIRST TIME TODAY AND THINKING ABOUT USEING A MOBIL 1 FILTER WITH 0-40 MOBILE 1 OIL? MY ENGINE IS PRETTY NOISY ALREADY AND IT HAS MOBIL 1 IN IT NOW.
WHAT FILTER DO YOU GUYS RECOMMEND? :dontknow:

True story... When I had my 97 Ram 4x4 I always heard a moaning sound when I started up the motor (especially when it was cold out). The moan would occur for about 8 seconds then go away with no consequence to the performance. That went on for years and no one was able to answer my questions on "why." Well, I thought it was probably a sign of a 318 aging and didn't bother with it. Of course I changed my own oil according to factory specs (and I used to work on cars) so I thought nothing of it. I used Mobile1, Fram and WIX filters only. Well, when I got my 10 I had the oil changes performed at the stealership. The first three were expensive so I decided to do them myself and keep record of them. I used Mobile1 filters religiously. But then I started to notice that same moaning sound coming from #1900's powerplant when she was started up during the Houston winter months. WTF? This isn't a 318 motor. These two motors are nothing alike other than they are Chrysler built. So was is a Dodge thing? Couldn't be. I took it in for warranty work once and mentioned the noise. The tech raised his brow and had nothing to add. Then, later it occurred to me that I was changing my own oil using aftermarket filters. When I returned I brought this up to a Viper tech. He concluded that anything other than an OEM Viper filter may cause that to happen. To some it may sound ridiculous, but there are times my friends when one must give the ridiculous a try. And you know what? Ever since I continued using Viper filters that noise never happened again. So it goes without saying, I am an advocate for such OEM parts.

:top:Viper filter FTW!!!

Excellent. Then if in the future you get that noise, you'll know what NOT to use.:D

I used the k&n filter once or twice but read that maybe it was letting to much trash getting in the motor so I switched back to mobile1.. I think my truck use to had that noise too back in 06 a couple months after i bough it shoed to bone at the mopars nat. in 06 but then the noise just stop 1 day..:dontknow: i also remember putting a bottle of the lucas thing to make the motor run quiter.. so don't know what maked the noise to go away...
but I will try the viper filter next time....I'm always open to try new things on my truck if somebody else already tryed them and had good results...

The purpose of the oil filter is the same as the air and fuel filter, to simply remove impurities from the oil.

Most filters and oil pumps have bypass provisions(dirty oil is better than no oil) built in in case the filter becomes clogged or the viscosity of the oil becomes to high (very cold/wrong viscosity). Engineers and engine builders have for years recommended using the largest filters(within reason),for all three applications.

The size of a filter is sometimes chosen based on space limitations as a consideration, with capacity, flow rating, and pressure drop suffering somewhat.

The first thing I thought when I received the Viper filter was how small it is.

The noise some of you may be talking about might be the over pressure relief
valve(s) fluttering because of the small(relatively) size of the filter to begin with. (WHAT ELSE COULD IT BE?)

I am going to dissect several filters and post the pic's.

I believe you can also use the comp coupe oil filters on any GenIII engine, but I would have to search some more to see if that is viper specific

The mounting flange is the same as the FL1A (most common filter made)

Been using Mobil 1 filters since first oil change. Have not had any issues. I may try the viper one next as well... Anyone know the make of the Viper one?
