when they put this POS shifter in these trucks? I knew they weren't great, but I got into one of my work trucks, a 96 F350. The shifter was MUCH better.

I wanted to get an X metal, but time was of the essence! I went to my local speed shop and they could have a B&M the same day. I installed it today. DAMN what a difference.

What was Dodge thinking?

+1 on that.

The only downfall to the B&M and x metal shifter is the upper lever is made of aluminum and when shifting in competition or agressively they have broken the upper lever.

We now have an upgraded shifter availble made of steel to replace the upper part of the lever.

Mine has the steel upper. Said so on the box!
newer B&M's have steel levers, the cheery performance ones look better though, gonna get me one after christmas:burnout:

Part number 45040. I just bought one a couple weeks ago, just looking for the time to put it in now.

Cost! Dodge was thinking cost. Never got a straight answer why when they were selling the trucks for 40+.
Hurst gave several prototypes but DCX decided on cheep..er

The stock shifter is a freaking hurst they just suck. The stock shifter is better than the x-metal unless your racing. The xmetal is hard to shift and does this super irritating twist thing in 3rd. The xmetal is noisy too and vibrated my teeth out, I hated it. My truck came with an x metal when I bought it and I traded straight up for a stocker. Now I got a b&m it's the best by far unless you have a hard time with hitting 3rd, then you might want the xmetal, but the advantages don't outweigh faults.
