Well, we got my wife a new car. Brand new Impreza sedan. Nice little car. We also looked at a new WRX, and took it for a test drive. Uh, I dunno what the hell all the hype is about those things. Granted it was obviously bone-stock, but I wasn't impressed at all with it. You feel a tiny little jolt once the boost kicks in right before it's time to hit 2nd. It pulls ok through 2nd, but once you tach out and hit 3rd, the fun is over. And even calling it "fun" is a stretch. It was pretty disappointing to say the least. So much so that we didn't even think it was worth the 5k over the cost of a regular Impreza.

We liked the WRX, but balls-wise we expected (well...I expected) a lot more out of it.

Anyway, she's more than happy with her new Impreza so that's what counts.

good for her. hope she really enjoys it. they are great in bad weather too :D

Yeah, you didn't drive the STI. Dealers don't even allow test drives in those cars. You drove the tame version. Not that they are super fast. They compare very close to our trucks.

The regular WRX is only rated at 224 hp; they're quick-ish, but certainly not fast. Though like most turbo motors, they respond pretty favorably to engine bolt-ons. An old room-mate of mine had an '02 WRX wagon that dynoed 270+ to the wheels with headers, up pipe, down pipe, turbo back exhaust, boost controller, and a custom dyno tune. Completely stock turbo and internals. You also have to launch it like you hate it - bring it up to around 6000 and dump the clutch, while trying to ignore the tortured noises from the drivetrain.

Edit: Oh yeah, congrats on the new ride - is it the brand new bodystyle 5 door hatchback-ey one?

I've driven both the wrx and sti stock and at various stages of modification clear up to track prepped. I can say that I agree the wrx in stock form is less than aw inspiring however they respond to mods really nicely and can do some impressive things. An sti with the boost turned up to the limit of the stock turbo with supporting mods is a rush. You can't take your hands off the shifter in the first two gears @ WOT or you will be bouncing off the rev limiter before you can reach for it to grab the next gear.

ya i hate thoes cars .. they look like a oversized lunch box... some are fast .. ive raced several all races verry verry close ... managed to squeez out a win everytime but very close ...

Brand new body-style, not hatchback.

My daughter has an 06 WRX wagon and it is not a rocket ride but very fun to drive. The car handles well and goes around corners like a roller coaster car with the AWD. Hers is stock and the handling and braking make for a sporty type ride. You do have to drive it like it was stolen to make it run semihard. In 24000 miles it has only needed oil changes, and regular service.

I am not a great fan of ricer type imports but the WRX is a good ride for a S#!tbox.

Hope your wife enjoys her new car...........:D
