boy did my truck wake up, thanks to dc performance and justin at jmb my truck has finally woke up,,,justin was out of this world to deal with, even called and asked him questions about parts I did not get from him and he was more than willing to answer them and i think it was like 7:30 in the morning, His cold air intake is bad ass. I will be putting on his traction package soon as i get a tourge wrench. the color red matched my valve covers perfect.

the new computer and 170 t stat is great too, I like how my truck runs way cooler now.

thankyou justin and dc, hope to be doing alot more business with you in the future

I dont understand what the tstat does or how it works... I've sat in ignorance waiting for someone else to ask the question for the longest time but I still dont know... so wtf is it? lol

when the coolant in the engine gets to a certain temp the thermostat opens. most work with a spring that when it gets to a certain temp it looses its pressure and allows the water to pass throu. by putting a colder opening thermostat in, it allows the coolant to enter the radiator sooner and thus stays cooler. help any?

It regulates the water temperature of the water in the engine. Simply put, it closes, keeps water in the engine until it reaches the predetermined temp, then opens, let's that water out into the radiator, while cooler water out of the radiator replaces it and the cycle starts all over again. A 170 degree version opens sooner and intuitively more often than a 190 etc, keeping the engine cooler, IF the radiator and rest of the system can keep up with the more frequent request for cool water...make sense?

I still don't see how a 170 degree stat will help if our trucks run on the average 190-200 degrees???:dontknow: :dontknow:

Isn't the stock tstat a 190 degree unit?

The otehr side of the equation is improving the radiator efficiency if your driving conditions require it. I understand there are fan kits that help with this.

Enjoy the ride

The thermostat is what controls the temp. If all else is up to snuff, a 170 degree theremostat will make the truck run at 170-180 instead of the 190-210 they run stock with the 190 thermostat in place. Think of it like the thermostat in your house, it regulates the temp.

i always thought that our trucks start loosing power at 180 and over , so keeping it cooler keeps at peak hp

yepp i agree and isnt it amazing that it only $30 from x-metal and really help it a lot! by keep it from lose power at 180 or over!!

Yeah, I get it, it just flips the lever to cool more often, I get it.... But what about long term running, does it really make a difference when the radiator heats up too? Everything averages out over time anyhow right? Or does the radiator have enough fluid to compensate for the more frequent openings?

YOU WON'T BE DISAPPOINTED WITH THE TRACTION KIT. ITS GREAT. CONGRATS ON THE PURCHASES!

I am guessing folks aren't having trouble with the cooler thermostat. If you don't have a good cooling system then having the cooler thermostat could hurt. If the water is not in the radiator long enough to "cool off" then it is just pumping the hot water back into the engine. But since so many have tried it and report the engine running cooler I would assume our cooling systems are up to the task! :D

been running the hell out of mine the last few days and no problems, I installed my stage 1 traction package today and still had alot of spin but the roads were pretty cold. But when i hit second it does feel like the truck squats down in the ass alot harder

Dont forget the flash also turns on the fan sooner. Stock flash has the fan come on at about 220!!!! Mine has only come on once.....in a massive traffic jam with the no wind to cool the engine.

The thermostat is spring steel that opens at a pre determined temp factory seems to be 190-200. This regulates cooling how:
Water doesnt pass throught the cooling system when the Tstat is closed it is basically not circulating. The water gets hot from the engine combustion and isnt passing through the radiator. The tstat opens due to the spring steel and the water begins to flow allowing it to cool by passing through the radiator. When the water is cooled to the Tstats temp setting it closes again. It appears that our trucks retard the timing when the engine reaches a certain temp. This is the HP loss that has been talked about. I have run older 351s with no Tstat and had no issues of course this was a vehicle with no computer. Realize that heat in general can rob HP as well due to the heating of the air fuel mixture above ideal. Im not a mechanic and this is my limited exp with this hope it helps.

You also can't go by what your temp gauge states as generally the temp gauge pickup is not on the thermostate housing but somewhere on the block. Meaning you can install a 170 thermo and have consistent 190 readings. Question becomes by installing the 170 thermo did the gauge show a reduction in temps in similar driving conditions compared to the stock thermo?

I know on my truck I can feel the pwr reduced when my gauge hits around 210...easy to do here in Phx during summer. Putting a 170 thermo won't do beans to help me. Having the fans kick on earlier is a much better solution and/or adding additional electric fan to the radiator.

Also, Thermo's dont just open and close. The valve will actually slide back n forth given the temp in small incriments. There is constant flow of water through your engine once the valve reaches temp limit w/ normal driving.

Chuck is right on the only time the 170 thermo will help is when you don't need it (when the outside temp. is cool or your 55 mph+). Setting in traffic your temp will rise untill your fan comes on.

Which color RED and what finish did you get for your CAI to match the valve covers best???
