Woman tasered at Best Buy
'Tis the season...

By Egan Orion: Friday, 21 December 2007, 9:17 AM

AN IRATE SHOPPER was tasered in front of a crowd of customers at a busy Best Buy store in Daytona Beach, Florida.

Elizabeth Beeland, a 35 year old yoga instructor, reportedly got loud and irate when confronted for using an allegedly "suspect" credit card that was actually hers. A store surveillance video shows her appearing upset, waving her arms.

The video shows that after Beeland turns away, police officer Claudia Wright approaches and immediately tasers her in the abdomen, knocking her down.

Officer Wright said Beeland was "verbally profane, abusive, loud and irate."

Subsequently arrested and taken to jail, Beeland faces misdemeanor charges including disorderly conduct and resisting arrest.

Daytona Beach police chief Michael Chitwood defended his officer's actions, saying "The woman is repeatedly told to cease and desist her conduct and activities. As the officer is trying to approach her, you can see her throw her hands up and her arms flailing. The taser is designed for incidents like that."

The American Civil Liberties Union is reportedly up in arms over the episode.

Neither Beeland nor her lawyer have talked to the press about the incident yet, but it's reportedly the first time any Daytona Beach police officer has deployed their taser on someone without an actual physical confrontation or resistance.

Approximately 300 people have died in the US and Canada following incidents involving use of tasers by law enforcement personnel in just the last few years.

Happy shopping!

Fantastic pun (or triple entendre?)
Props to the writer of the article.

This is how this country should treat people that dont obey the law:rock:
In India she would have been beaten first than arrested:rock:

Although I don't know the whole story I agree with you Annu. She should STFU and respect those around her and especially the police. People hate the police until they need them. I would taze more people than the police do if I could.

Another reason to stay home and shop online...:D

Yep...!

I'm beginning to think the police need to go back to body slamming people and beating the snot out of them with there nite stick

If your going to hurt their feelings, leave a lasting mark

I agree, just wish they didn't tazer her in front of a crowd but I guess it would be hard to ask an irate person to move to a more private area....

Just think of how many people got the message to calm down.......when asked

Indeed it will... uh, Will.

As mentioned in the article, the video shows Beeland becoming irate, arms flailing and such, as a result of a question that emerged regarding the integrity of the credit card she was using. Okay so if it were me and I knew this card wasn't stolen because MY NAME IS ON IT then I wouldn't have to get irate because I didn't do anything wrong. I would calmly ask to speak with a manager and seek a peaceful solution to this matter instead of getting mad and loud in public. In Beeland’s defense (since there is always two sides) I feel she may have been aggravated with shopping for the holidays, found something(s) she really wanted and just snapped when something went wrong with her card. But acting like that still isn’t the correct solution.

I am almost certain this was caught on CCTV (commonly used in department and electronic stores). This would mean there was no audio included with the unfolding scenes. Nothing could take it out of me that she was asked to cease her disruptive behavior and she refused because in her mind she was in the right. What’s going to happen next is she will be told that she’s under arrest. It could very well be that’s when she resisted by turning and walking away; thereby, urging Claudia to do the Wright thing (pun intended) and taser Beeland. Now if the taser wasn’t used and Beeland were taken into custody by physical force then some numbskull in the crowd would still holler “POLICE BRUTALITY” and we’d still be reading about this story with a different accusation against Officer Wright… In front of a crowd of people isn’t someplace to just disrespect an authoritative figure by resisting arrest. That’s when the officer is going to be more intent on apprehending the perp because it will set an example to onlookers that they can just do that.

I say this from my own past experience in a mall back in ‘97… To put it short: a shoplifter, resisting arrest, a fight, an arrest (FINALLY), hundreds of onlookers, a bump on the head, a hospital visit, charges filed.. it was a damn MESS! That’s the stuff that made me hate working in law enforcement.

I seriously doubt that this will end well for the police department.

The use of force, non-lethal though it may be, on an unarmed person who is not threatening the use of force or is an imminent danger to anyone, is absurd. I could see the potential for this result in an airport or on an airplane, as the sense of humor has been completely and forever removed from the people in and around that industry.

But come on. A loud-mouthed customer?

If the courts decide that that kind of action on the part of the officer was permissible, then I want the right to do it to the moron's kids that are screaming in line behind me!

Reminds me of the recent story of an innocent black woman who was pulled over and forced at gunpoint to lay face down on the side of the road, right in front of her children. A woman who was pregnant, and near full-term. All of this because her car was a close match to a report of a car being stolen from a local mall.

I'm thinking that the cops could use a lot more common sense in situations where they are not in any kind of danger. I personally don't give a shit if they're overworked, underpaid, under stress, and overwhelmed. Plenty of working people are. It's no excuse to use unnecessary force.

I think cops see the taser as a quick, non lethal (most of the time) and easy way to control a person without having to physically get involved. Zap! Slap the cuffs on them. Your done. I think it's use is becomming more and more common but feel it should only be used as a last resort to lethal force.

She was acting like a kid and received what you would like to do to someone 1/4-1/2 her age.

im a huge supporter of police but i think the taser is getting out of hand...next thing you know it will be a protocal in normal inquiry situations.....dont get pulled over for speeding or you might get a tasered. I have a really good friend who works for the LAPD and he says they are given free reign to use the taser whenever they " feel threatened" define that and they could use it for any reason at all, which is scary
