Working one day, not the next? Barely runs.

Eric, im a little confused now. Initially you said the truck was running very

rough...Now your saying the truck does not produce a spark(and doesnt start

anymore?) How are you n checking for spark? with a timing gun or an actual

in-line spark plug tester?

As far as the FC for map sensor, did you look into that? Does it come back

after you cleared it? I would be concerned with it since it does give vital

information for the motor to run right.

As a matter of fact, it was barely running and now does not fire at all. I've just been testing for spark with a timing gun.

The CEL has been on since the engine and AEM went in. I never bothered to check it before or clear it, since the factory computer no longer monitors the engine. Perhaps someone could post up the clear CEL procedure for me just so I can kill the light. ;)

i have spent a lot of money on my truck just like you eric but ...i can not justify 10k...for a tuner ....just cant do it......

Of course not. Think of all the pretty clothes that'd buy you!:)

To clear the CEL, disconnect the negative battery terminal for 10 minutes or so. This should re-boot your cpu Eric.

But you might want to check what the code is before you clear it...it might give us a hint...

Already did earlier in the thread. P1296: loss of 5v @ MAP sensor. BTW, I've had the neg term disco'd for days, and the CEL persists. It may never clear.

Well F me running.

Took the truck to the local dealership yesterday to have them run through the diagnostics for the ignition system.

Good news: Got a call today that the truck is running.

Bad news: They just plugged stuff in.:dontknow:

The next task is to go through and try to make it fail again. I can only guess that there is a connector having issues.

I feel your pain... connections SUCK! And it just kills ya even more to get it running and NOT know what you did to make it run! :dontknow: And, then you can't duplicate the problem again. :toilet: All the while, you KNOW it will "duplicate" the problem again on it's own... when you are 100mi from home... in the rain/snow/etc. ;)

But... I'm happy to hear it, at least, runs for now and there was nothing MAJOR going on.

Not surprising that it ran when you dropped it at the dealer.

If you dropped me off at the dealer I would run too..............:elefant::elefant::elefant:

Wish they had found something to pinpoint.

Thanks for your input Robert.:)

If you re-read my post though, you'll see that I tested 7 of 10 cylinders (to ensure I was seeing both coil packs), but did not say that I'm only getting spark on 3 of 10 cylinders. In actuality, I am getting ZERO spark on any cylinders. Were I getting spark to a few cylinders, I'd probably have solved this by now.;)

Also, I've completely bypassed the AEM and tried running on the factory ECU with the same results. That said, aside from the spark plug wires, there were no non-factory components or wiring left in the system during that test. Trust that my first thoughts when something isn't working properly is that it's something that's been modded. That's why I eliminated everything outside of the factory setup.

My understanding of the ignition system is that it will not work without both good cam and crank trigger signals. The ECU needs to see the cam signal to initiate the ignition sequence, then the crank trigger signal is used to maintain ignition timing. If I install a new cam sensor, aside from coil packs it appears to be the last component in question. I just don't think both coil packs would give up the ghost at the same time.

So, if a new cam sensor doesn't fix the problem, I'm gonna give up and hand it over to my tuner. Because at that point, it will be beyond me. It will take someone who is knowledgeable enough with the engine harness that they can identify the right wires, and know what voltages and signals should be present. I'm not stupid, electrically speaking, but this will call for someone with knowledge and ability that I lack.

..and we'd start be throwing the VEC out, and getting a Pectel!:)
did he not answer your calls i swear tuners are like painters!!!!!

Same here.

I think it would be sensible to just go around the engine compartment pushing on wiring and connectors to see if I can find the frickin' part/wire that caused it in the first place.

God, if I wanted this kind of trouble I'd have bought a BMW!

Oh shit. Already did.

By my figuring, the dealership costs less than my tuner!:p

Could also be condensation in the fule line... Cold Weather can cause that as well... Don't rule out the critters though. :)

Since the issue is no spark, start with the wiring going to the coil packs, likely something there. Never had an issue with coil packs in this truck, my 97 2500 V10 or my Ws6, but could they have been on their last leg when you did your burn out and that spike as the RPMs jumped took them out? Then work backwards from there. Hope it helps.

Update????

Brought the truck in and pulled all of the plugs. All black, caked with carbon.

Drained all of the fuel. Contaminated.

Replaced plugs, fuel, and changed the oil.

Turned the key. Fired on the first try.

Not sure if the fuel I bought was bad, went bad, or was contaminated by someone while it was outside for a couple of days.

Bottom line is that it's ready to head to Portland for dyno tuning.
