There are wrecks at the bottom of Lake Superior that are almost perfectly preserved as well. In fresh water, most hard non-porous materials will remain indefinitely. The rusting and disintegration occurs once they are removed from the water and the oxygen starts to take its toll.

Salt water is (obviously) much different.
