None of the onboard diagnostic systems always point to the exact problem, even today's.
If you pound on the cat with something like the palm of your hand, it should be quiet inside the can. If it sounds like it is full of rocks, it is done and needs to be removed or replaced.
Check the wiring harness on the rear passenger side of the engine, to make sure it has not touched the manifold or header (if you have them). Check the leads going to the O2 sensors as well. I had trouble with one of my leads back in the day.
