I think all need to understand that the health care finance situation in this country is fundamentally based on well people paying for the sick. If you don't believe it, think about how insurance companies work, think about how Medicare works, ...it is all based on having a pool of participants that are fairly well and paying premiums anyway. It is not a prepaid health care delivery system in which your funds are saved and invested so that they can be used for you in the future. It is all actuarially based on assumptions that the well will remain well and continue to pay, and that the sick will not require more funds that the well put into the system.
That is one of the major problems that is facing us with the baby boomer's...there is this huge water melon of people, about to puke out of the pipe line into the health care delivery system that will not be able to be supported by MEDICARE payers...we have the same issue looming with Social Security.
If you have never read anything about health care finance, you all need to understand the system. If you don't like what you see, get involved in creating the solutions, or be satisfied with where the current system is headed. No matter who you ask, conservative, liberal, or any one else who has looked at the issue...the future, if unmodified, is grim.
