You guys are so lucky.
Here in the UK we are stuck to making plates from set patterns that indicate a cars year of manufacture.
You can put an older plate on a newer car but not vice versa.
My truck was issued with HX05 CXZ (the number 01-99 will represent the year) but I have put an earlier plate on from when the letters A to Y represented the year.
I paid £400 ($600) for my number plate V11PYR. (A 'V' Plate represents 1999)
V1PER sold for about $45,000.
It's very compicated but not when you live here.
My nickname is HOGGER so I got H10GGR (H was 1990) for my MG-ZT.
I wish we could have anything we wanted.
