So I just made my final payment on the SRT-10 2004 RC...you all know the one...and I made the last payment on my 2006 GTO 6-speed. I've been reading a lot about the 392 Challenger SRT and the upcoming Camaro ZL1. I went down to the local Dodge dealer to see if I could test drive an SRT Challenger 392 6-speed, but alas they were all automatics.....I guess they only sell these to girls:D. They did have a used Black SRT 6.1 Challenger with a 6-speed so I took it for a test drive. I was really impressed with the smooth ride, especially on the freeway....glass smooth at 80 mph in 6th gear at 1800 rpm. I was however really disappointed in the power (425hp) felt really slow compared to my truck....I know, I realize that my truck is quicker than most, but still I thought it should be somewhat responsive.
My question is.....do any of you have experience with the 6.1 vs the 6.4, and is there a noticeable difference between the two (prefer 6-speed comparisons). I'm just starting my information gathering and will have to wait till the spring to test the ZL1 Camaro. Any input will be appreciated.

Don't those have a "Valet" switch? I have a buddy that has a 2009 and its quick I'm actually thinking about buying a new one with 6.4 6 speed. Leno's Garage did test on one.

A little difference. Like all Chryslers, they are pigs with big engines, not that I dislike that, but it is reality. I actually have hope the new Viper drops weight, given all the rumors I hear.

My Dad has a 392 HEMI Challenger 6 speed. It is badass, its blue with the white racing stripes. Commemorative Edition. World of difference compared to the 6.1L. It will easily smoke one of our trucks. Not the worked ones mind you. Just the somewhat normal trucks.

Get your self a jeep Srt-8 . But one what's going to be out next year . 480hps 8 speed auto and AWD . That's going to be beast .

I say all the hemi srt's are badass. who cares what other peoplr think is the best one.

You just paid off a 10 and a GTO. sounds like you will be able stick a little cash into the car/truck you WANT, and mod it to make it as fast as you want.

not trying to be rude by puting money in the equation, i know its not always politicaly correct to talk about finances, so i am just guessing here.

good luck with your purchase.

I have always wondered, would a slightly modded 10 (i.e. my 10), take a 6.1 srt challenger

What part of "automatic" don't you understand? I love to shift....everything I own is a 6-speed.

You should be able to beat a 6.1 easy, once I was at Fontana and there was an SRT club there. About 8 SRT's (300's and Chargers) and their best that day was 13.8 and I was at 13.05 (truck was full weight , few mods like exhaust and tune) and a 20 mph headwind.

i had an srt-8 chally auto because here never came the 6 speed and its a great car but im slow for the 425 and the price now im happy with my dd charger rt aint a beat but is very confortable and i dont see a big ass diference between the 5.7 to the 6.1 for almost 20k here in mexico

That is slow for SRT8s....some RTs will turn high 13s...My former 06 SRT8 would turn a 13.4 stock except for catbacks...DA was usually 2600-3200.....most seem to run low 13s with a good driver and average track...one guy did 12.6 in a completely stock 300 SRT8 with only 500 miles...the DA was negative 300...

The 6.1s have to be driven hard to keep the PCM from learning (mind went blank...cant think of the right word). You can unhook the battery and have a completely different car.......the 6.1 also makes it power in the mid/upper range which can make it feel heavy on the street as compared to the more peppy 5.7.........Power comes on strong about 4000RPM...
