If you have a truck with 4.10 gears NOTHING will give you a quicker performance gain than 4.88 gears.

Caveman and I have been talking about him changing to 4.88's and I could not think of anything it would hurt and only performance gains. Your truck will feel like you found 100 hidden horsepower from the 4.10's. The gain from 4.56's is not nearly so drastic but there is a good difference.

It makes the truck much more drivable in town and does not drastically hurt interstate driving. I have driven mine to Panama City twice with the 4.88's and could hardly tell a difference.

I have had all three gears in my truck at one time or another and if you have 4.10's CHANGE EM to 4.56 or 4.88.

I have kicked the idea around of switching gears, but have since changed my mind. The reason I don't want to is because based on what I want to do and the tire size I will be running it would require a 5th gear shift in the 1/4 mile, unless my math is wrong..

It makes so much difference in the fun factor, the extra shift is not even a factor.

Do you have any in car vids of your truck with the 4.88s?

would you guys reccomend these for someone that just likes to get on the gas once in a while to scare the crap outta the passengers? (i dont race mine at the track or anything)

Absolutely!!!

Just like adding 100 hp. to a stocker.

Jack, thanks for starting this thread! Am I understanding correctly that a non-OEM axle housing is required for 4.88's? Why did you stop running the 4.88's?

I'm not a gear expert but would, 4.10 gears would be stronger than 4.88 gears ?

No, your standard housing is fine, you would need a new carrier for the 4.88's. the 4.10's and the 4.56's use the same carrier. The only reason to change housings is to use stronger axles or a Detroit Locker posi unit.

I have no idea which is stronger but the 4.88 should be under less stess than the 4.10.

5th gear is not designed to go to into power....so if you re ever planning running your truck in the 1/4 mile 4.88s is the dumbest thing i have ever heard of...

With good traction you will go thru the 1/4 in 4th gear.

And 99% of your driving is on the street not on the dragstrip.

Only if you run a 32" tall tire. I run a 30" M&H Cheater slick(its like having 4.88's) and I go through the lights at 6000 + rpm(118+ mph)...almost on the rev limiter...I could not make a full 1/4 mile with 4.88's. But thats just me:rock::burnout:

I put 4.88's in my black truck and loved it. More fun on the street definetly. I ran the 1/4 a few times and hit 4th right before the line. I don't understand why people drive these trucks and worry about the gas mileage. The fun on the streets outweighed any thing else, but I didn't race every weekend. To each his own, just depends on what you want.

I've averaged 15.5 MPG over the last 12,000 miles (that's calculating it by hand, the overhead console reads a little higher). I think that's pretty good millage. :dontknow:
