Getting Great MPG in a QC!!

my last trip in my qc from NY to tx and back i averaged 17.6 computer read 17.5 i got 17.6 doing the math on fuel spent for the miles traveled. so pretty close and mine was just tuned up before trip oil change replaced spark plugs wires and coils since i had 1 spot burnt on one of the coils. plus tranny flush and upgraded the gm selenoid since i was getting the 1-2-1-2-3 jump issue. but very doable in a quad cab :)

Whats this GM solenoid upgrade? I HATE that jumping from the tranny! Im like "PICK A DAMN GEAR SO I CAN BEAT THIS GUY" Anyway I havent even done the sparks, wires, coils yet. Stealership wanted 1000 dollars for wires and plugs alone because they have to pull the intake. Any thoughts on that? What am I looking at price wise to replace all three? Thanks

It's a common problem in those trannys and the reason mine is now a 6 speed! You can get the solenoid thru Suncoast Trans or Hawk Trans.

That's amazing!! Best mine would do as an auto was 13.5 on highways and 12 city and that's never stepping on the pedal. As a 6 speed I can now get 17.5
Highways and about 13.5 city.
I'm thinking the trucks with the timing retarded can get better mileage at the cost of power though. There are definitely variances in these beasts.

Well bud, I see your point about the rpms…but again you said you dont think I can gain mpg with a little maintenance (you seem to have left out a few things) but all I have to say is look at the picture in my original post! A picture is worth a thousand words. If you still look at the picture, and the other guys picture, and still dont beleive….then maybe we should agree to disagree.

i agree with you guys, my truck gets good mileage if i try, but which one of us got a viper powered truck to get good mileage?! i got it to rev up, slide sideways, and beat my friends with camaros. Besides i can reset my avg mpg when doing 30 mph in 6th gear and have it read 40mpg long enough to snap and picture

I hear ya, but like I said in the original post, I did this as a test. Just to see. And I snapped that picture after driving about 30 miles ok? Whats with you guys on this forum? Buncha damn crybabies and haters that apparently CANT READ!!

i got wires and coil and the solenoid from tony. as far as install i have a local mechanic that treats me great i just go there and he barly charges me anything even though i bring my own parts. the hardest thing is the damn wires and coil packs. i upgraded when i did mine to the heavier wires and the upgraded coil packs.

And what did you gain by doing all that?

honestly not sure but i had a burnt wire and when we pulled intake 1 of the pins on one of the coil packs was smoked black so i was replacing them and while at it i upgraded which is a stronger spark. and same with the solenoid i was getting the hunt in the tranny and that stopped it

I really wanna hear more about the solenoid. I hate that hunting shit. Is it an easy mod? Can I do it myself? Anything you can tell me about it would be awesome.

its fairly simple just drop the pan and i think its 4 screws and 1 connector to replace it. but as i said i had my local mechanic do it much simpler to use a lift and my mechanic doesn't charge me an arm and a leg so usually go that route.

It is a easy fix and if you get on you tube and look up 48re solenoid change you should find a how to video it's the same on our trucks as the diesels
