Made a Lil video to show you guys how your coolant temps should act if all is correct. No fluctuating temps, regardless of AC usage, idling in traffic, racing down track, etc. I like to see temps of around 185-190 with oil temps within 10 degrees lower of the coolant. :rock:

Thanks a bunch man, helps me feel better on mine. My temp is spot on with yours but the oil temp is always just below the 200 mark. Could I have a faulty oil temp gauge as it stays pretty will in line with the engine temp reading. thanks again Scott.

Are you running 15/50 Mobil? Could be a dirty oil cooler! :dontknow:
 
yep, 15/50. less than a thousand miles on the oil and cleaned the oil cooler but will power wash it today and see if that helps. thanks again Doc

Hey Venomous, i know this topic has been beat to death but i'm currently running 10w30 mobil 1 synthetic because thats what my 04' cap says to run. I live in AZ and its starting to get hot. by next month im sure it will be around 105-115 daily. Would i benefit from 15/50? or switching to the updated 0/40?

Yessir I believe it's beneficial to run 15/50 vs 0/40 or 10/30. I have used 10/40 when I could find 15/50 and it was great as well.
 
What about running 5w 40. I just changed my oil, and im using amsoil 5w 40, i believe. Before, my oil temp would get to right about 200 and my engine temp would be right at 200 and sometimes just a little higher. Is that bad? Not sure where its at now, as i just changed the oil last night. Got a 5 hr drive tomorrow to see some family.
 
Sorry but I have to come out and declare the results of your very questionable 'testing methods' is at best inconclusive and at worse mis-leading. I can be just as arbitrary and state that if in nearly 100,000 miles you've never had your fans come on no more than just 'idling' you weren't paying attention.

Also, our trucks do not have oil coolers its an exchanger. It is designed primarily to help bring up the oil temps faster and as well maintain oil temp while running by exchanging with your coolant. Maybe you corrected or made more clear with your second video but I couldn't bring myself to even watch it.

The highest recorded temp in Waco TX was 112F back in 2000. I have a home in Phoenix which averages over 30 days a year of temps OVER 110F and have a home in Flagstaff which sits at 7000FT...-15F is quite common in winter. I've lived in Tx for quite a few years...never did I see temps even close in either case.

I won't even get into the whole oil thing but it is clear many still don't understand viscosity ratings as outlined by the manufacturer or how SAE arrives at those ratings much less what the ratings really mean.

I'll crawl back into my sandbox now...

I can be just as arbitrary and state that if in nearly 100,000 miles you've never had your fans come on no more than just 'idling' you weren't paying attention.

Sorry Chuck, I'm not great at making a movie, but I was simply showing where the temps should be. Sir I work on my truck and have many 04-06 and see similar results. Temps should maintain steady and not climb to 210 then back to 185, then back to 210!! My fans barely do more than idle turn and yes I've had tunes where high speed is on at all times and its loud and kicks out some air! Not sure where in Texas you are talking but we hit over 50 days of 100+ temps almost yearly here in Waco (Central Texas)!! So yes comparable to AZ with a bit more humidity. Not sure what your point is but I'm trying to help the fellow owners that are not cooling well. They even admit coolant temps aren't what they once were. That's a problem! We also race at temps in excess of 97* with the same stationary cooling results.


This about coolant temps, not oil viscosity but yes that horse has been beaten.
15w = tested weight in winter temps-32*
50= tested weight at engine running temp 210*

I like my oil to flow and not be too thick, in lay terms.
You are correct about heat exchanger, not really an oil cooler, but again, if your coolant temps are in line so will your oil temps unless in maybe a road racing scenario. :)

If your temps dont get that close then what temperature does your truck run at? My truck seems to run around 200 and 200. My commute is very short 6.5 miles to work and all city. never really payed attention at freeway speeds.

You are correct on the oil :rock: However, I prefer to follow the manufactures advice as stated in the owners manual...0-40 synthetic. I'm an engineer and can assure you more than one engineer gave considerable thought/testing/analysis to oil viscosity for our engines. Thicker could be better! ;)

See that's where I disagree, my temps have always stayed 185 ish regardless of highway, traffic jam, backroading, towing, etc. Again, like most newer cars it'll stay stationary.

I lied lol. I watched it on the way home and it was around 190 and oil was around 180. At stop lights it did climb to around 200 and 190
 
It has not gotten above 85* yet but I did install a 170* therm when I did all my mods and I have not gone above 180* oil or coolant yet but I need to see when it gets into the 90's to see if it really makes a difference, so far it is 20* cooler than it ever ran before. Used to run 200* on both gauges before just like Scott's. Running M1 15-50 with Viper filter also...
 
Road trip over the weekend, 500 miles each way with a 5x10 closed uhaul.

On the way up, 60 F ambient, was running a very steady 190-ish on each gauge at 70 mph.
On the way home, 80 F ambient, running a cycling 200 to 210-ish on both at 70 mph.

Need to throw in a 170 t-stat.
