Hey guys, I have a silver 2004 single cab, and it dropped the valve seats on number one cylinder, so we replaced the head and the piston etc. and got about a hundred miles out of it when the valve seats on number 8 cylinder (the other head) dropped. What's up here, anybody else with this experience and what do you think is causing it?
 
Never hear f that happening .. What mods were done on the heads previous ? Factory heads ? Did the engine overheat ? Any Tuning done to lean out the fuel curve ? Detonation ?
 
@rottenronnie … your knowledge is needed about heads , mods , and possible problems .
 
The same thing happend to my engine by the previous owner.
Car has a LPG system installed and was driven hard before the seat dropped.
The damage happend or occured after the restart.

My thinking is get rid of the LPG system .. I’m guessing it’s having a problem causing a lean condition causing an over heating and detonation to occur with a defective tune . The trucks came from the factory with a rather rich fuel curve mixture tune and doing things that affect the mixture can make a dangerous lean condition and cause bad things to happen ..from past history there are very few tuners that are trusted to write tunes based on mods and Dino testing ..

@rottenronnie has a ton of knowledge on heads and mods on the motors .. maybe he’ll chime in and be able to give more insight .
 
Junky cams, valve seats, and lifters are things Chrysler products have not been able to get proper for the past 2-3 decades. I've read quite a few stories on SRT-10 engines dropping valves and/or seats along with excessive cam wear.

I haven't read any stories of SRT-10s running LPG so I cannot comment if it has any effect with valve seats.
 
Yes , Ive heard a few horror stories of valves dropping one was after a full rebuild on a Viper .. No idea what caused it possibly the valve retainer not installed properly or cheap parts , broken spring ? Hard to say , the guy spent a ton rebuilding it at his own repair shop and went out of business not to long afterwards .. never saw him again .

In a nutshell, the Viper heads aren't known for dropping valve seats under normal or even performance running conditions.
Agreed, I wonder why or even how a propane system could be setup to work like it should on a rather large performance engine like these.

Propane is a dry fuel and can raise hell with valve guides. It also is rather hard on exhaust valves AND SEATS due to required changes in ignition timing. It can cause the seats to recess and/or corrode over time.

Thanks for your response Ronnie!

I know it could be a additional stress for the whole system.
But here in Germany or even more in the eastern parts of Europe its pretty common to fit propane sytems to big engines.
The problem behind the lost valve seat was behind the steering wheel...
He wanted to see what the car is capable of.

Ill use the LPG system just for rolling around under low loads in case i need the full potential i switch back to gas.

Im pretty sure i will take the heads of the next one or two years for some modifications. Maybe also upgrade the valve seats and guides.
We will see.
 
Makes sense to switch between the two if it runs well on both
 
Heck Nitrogen Peroxide can do the trick .. It is a OXYGEN AGENT .. of course in a higher concentration than the home stuff .. Oh it is corrosive also .. but it will give a HP blast like Nitrous

Hey, I really appreciate the responses from you guys on this. My truck is on 93 octane gasoline. I got the truck as the second owner at 64,000 miles and had no problems with anything like this. Now, it has 80,000 on it. Recently though as I mentioned seats dropped on number 1 cyl. the in less than a hundred miles seats dropped on number 8, makes no sense so far.

@David Griffith @rottenronnie So no mods ? Tuned ? Has it thrown any codes ? Was it by any chance modified by the previous owner and restored back to factory parts ? ( like Nitrous , turbos , pro-charger, etc .. I’m still having the thoughts of a detonation or overheating condition possibly caused by a lean fuel condition …sensors like the O2 can send bad messages to the computer which control the fuel mixture ..

Well, these engines like to perform and should allow for MANY full-throttle excursions!!

Ill use the LPG system just for rolling around under low loads in case i need the full potential i switch back to gas.
