Can anyone tell me if it is a difficult process bringing a vehicle into the states from Canada? What does it entail? This situation in particular is a private sale, not from a dealer. Thanks in advance!

Not much. Paper work of sale. DMV inspection and registration. Done.

just sold my truck to a guy from the states. Its not hard but its a pain in the a$$. all you need is the bill of sale, and a letter of compliance from dodge. thats the pain. In order to get it I had to have a work visa for the states, or a job letter saying where my employment is going to be. we just made up a letter of employment so to speak. other than that i just had to give current odometer reading, vin # name, address. like i said its easy but a pain.

I'm a little confused. Who needs the work visa or job letter? What does that have to do with me buying a car from someone in Canada?

Does the DMV inspection have to happen prior to bringing the car to the states or once I get it back here? To be honest this is where not having a passport is biting me in the ass. I am having another reliable source inspect the car for me and he also knows the car personally, then I am going to have a transport company deliver it. Will that complicate things? This is not a done deal yet but it's looking very probable.

I have done this with 2 different trucks and a Harley when I moved to the US.

Drove both trucks down, the first trip I had an 08 Dakota pulling a trailer with my Harley. No issues at the border whatsoever.(they just wanted to see the VIN, my current registration, and proof of insurance. Both were registered to me in Canada at my old address and insured in Canada as well.

Second trip I drove my SRT and I was asked at the border for a letter from Chrysler stating the vehicle met US emissions. I did not have the letter and didn't even know at the time that it was needed. US Customs made me call and hire a broker. All the broker did was ask me for 3 pictures (1 of the truck, 1 of the door sticker, and 1 of the odometer) and charged me $450.00.
Then after waiting for him to do whatever paperwork was needed he faxed them to Western Union on the US side of the border. Customs would not receive the fax but they let me walk into Montana to go get them. I brought the paperwork back to them and I was on my way about 4 hours later.

Once I was settled in GA, I had to get a residence so that I could get a US drivers license. (Lived in a hotel for the first 2 months until my house was ready) with a license I was able to start the process to get the vehicles titled. To get the title you need emissions tested, inspection from your local police, they run the VIN etc. Several different forms are required depending on your state or county, then take all that shit to the tax office to get the titles. After they were titled I was able to register them and insure them in GA.

Kinda is a PITA but worth it if your getting a deal. There is quite a bit of paperwork that has to be done.

The seller will need it, no clue why thats important it just is. It seems like dodge either wants you to pay a broker or leave your vehicle at home and buy new across border. you can pm me your email address and i will forward you the email dodge sent me that i had to fill out and fax back to them. we didn't use a broker and he was at the border for an hour. that included the wait time.

Thank you very much guys!!! PM coming at you

With the dollar the way it is, its worth the hassle. I have experience crossing the border the other way (US into CA) and its pretty straight forward.

Yes it is. I was surprised to find out how much of a deal you can get right now. Right now the conversion is 1 = .76. Hopefully everything works out and goes smoothly.

Okay... Anybody ever hear of a bank check taking 30 days to clear for international from a US bank to a Canadian bank???

Banks should be able to do an electronic transfer. What's the name of the bank? RBC, Scotia etc.?

You will have no issues with CIBC. Do an electronic transfer and you will be good to go.

Thank you! Just a little bit of a process and sending tens of thousands of dollars to another country is a little weird. Unfortunately my dumbass doesn't have a passport either.
