I think they are there for purely aerodynamic reasons. As they probably do not "duct" air to the radiator...they probably keep a lot of the air from going around it. When they are removed, the air that enters there gets extremely "dirty"...and has to change direction many times to escape...

Scoobert, If money is an object, or you simply don't want to spend much on it... Try some JB Weld on it. I did that to an L-82 Corvette engine in a Dixie Super Sport one time to "tide me over"...but the JB Weld repair lasted through a couple years of pulling skiers. The cooling system on...
