I'll have the air compressor hooked into a dryer, and the power for the welders. Plumbing would have been nice but it would have put the price out of reach for me.

Just change the oil and add a couple of bottles of the friction modifier. That will more than likely cure the noises. If not, do like Tony said and rebuild the posi.

I had 4.88s in my RC and loved them. I still got 17 mpg driving from PA to NC and back with the RPMs still well below 2k. I don't remember how much the RPMs went up in 6th gear, but it wasn't outrageous.
