Here's your answer. I have run and still run MSD 6al BTM units for along time and never an issue. I think your BASE timing is wasy off. The above scenarios could also contribute to RUN ON/DIESELING such as left over gas/TOO RICH but it would need hot spots on the pistons or a very high comperssion motor to ignite after igntion is removed. I think it's all in your base timing.;)
 
Damn I'm late!:mad: Glad you got her going right. It is also advisable since we have the technoloogy, to buy yourself a wideband O2 sensor for each side of the exhaust to monitor Air/Fuel ratios at idle, cruise, and WOT as you would a Fuel Injected ride. Carbs have alot of adjusting to have pretty much put everything where you want/need them. Start with idle A/F ratio adn get it tuned in. Then your cruise, then WOT passes monitoring the A/F ratio. Some better units allow datalogging as well so you can go back and find where you need to fatten/lean. Good luck Bro.
