What kind of time could one gain in the Qtr Mi by simply replacing the 05's stock 4.56 gears for 4.88's? Would it be even more significant in the 1/8 mi? Thanks,

Michael

First make sure you can get the 4 88's still. I think I heard slows the quarter a bit but hella fun around town...could be wrong but still want them

Honestly, very little difference, seems to help in the 1/8 mi some. We are supposed to go to a 1/4 mi track next Sunday will be able to tell you more after that. If you were going from the 4.10's to 4.88's it makes a huge difference, not so much from the 4.56's.

not sure i've ever heard of anyone putting 4.88's in a QC, how many RPM's does a QC run at 70mph stock?

At 75 I believe mine is around 24-2500.

With your rear tire at 33" high, 4.56:1 gears you do not have to shift into 5th gear in the 1/4-mile.
You'll be about 5600/rpm in 4th gear when you clear the traps........
With 4.88:1 you will have to shift into 5th gear in the 1/4-mile.;)
And you will bring down your trap/speed by 4-8/mph. :dontknow:
And one more thing....you will be shifting alot more than you are now with the 4.56:1 gearing.

ok a QC with stock tire height(31.6inches) would be able to run 115mph at 6000rpm in 3rd gear, and would be running 2500rpm at 70mph in Overdrive and 2700rpm at 75mph. with 4.88's you'd be shifting from 2nd to 3rd real close to the 1/8th mile(79mph at 6000rpm)

Quick, how do you think it would be effected in an auto QC?
That seems to be your guys weak-point. Your auto/trans. and your tq. mgmt. system that runs it all. Some of the Q/C owners go through auto/trans. more than we go through clutches.
Again by putting the lower gears in, you'll put more strain on the trans......she'll run for awhile just fine.

4.88's would be easyer on the trans just like it's easyer on our clutches...

Actually Quick may be right....the higher rpm of the trans gears will cause more heat....because of this some owner manuals do not recommend using tow/haul unless needed..

only 200rpm at highway speeds though, and you could always add an external cooler. Something to think about though

I would say stick with the 4.56's and throw that money into the tranny. Depending on the tire height you run your gonna be shifting into od with the 4.88's and that will kill your time.

For the difference in the gear ratios it would be more cost effective to use a shorter DR . This would keep your stock gearing on the road and give you the lower final gear ratio you need at the track.

if you currently have 456 gears & run the 17" 390 DR's @ the track, that's pretty closee to 488's because the DR's aren't as tall as your stockers........ :)
