So I changed the oil today in my truck for the first time since I have owned it (less then two weeks) because the dealership I purchased it from lied to me and said that they had already changed the oil. Imagine my surprise when I go to pull off the oil filter and see stamped on the bottom of the oil filer…â€￾Installed at the Factoryâ€￾. Not only did the damn dealership not change it like they said, but neither did the freaking previous owner....when I bought the truck it had 2900 miles on it! D@mn it!

Anyway…I digress…the reason for this post was that after I changed my oil and filter (filled the new filter with oil prior to installing it), I fired up the truck to check for leaks and get all the fresh oil moving about, I noted a nasty, what I would call a “banging noiseâ€￾ coming from the transmission…it actually sounded like it was coming from the tranny bell housing area. The best way to describe it would be almost like what a piston slapping the wall of the cylinder block would sound like. I wish I could be more descriptive then that. In addition to this noise, I noted my gear shifter was bouncing all over the place in the center console.

I never noticed this noise 15 minutes prior to changing the oil as I took the truck around the block to warm up the oil…but then again, I was inside the truck and not standing outside of it.

Is this normal???? I have never known Tremec trannies to be noisy.

Thanks,
Joe

Almost 13 k miles on mine, and never any noise period!

I think some folks have experienced some noise after doing a shifter swap . . But that only because the stock shifter has all that sound dampening material around it. . . Someone will chime in, sorry about your truck. . .

T56's are noisy at idle with the clutch engaged and in neutral.
There are gear noises while in gear and while driving. This is nothing to worry about normally.
What you are hearing is just a backlask rattle between the gears inside the trans in neutral.

Change the factory fluid and you will find that it shifts much easier.
Do a search in the Do It yourself section on what to use and how to do it.

You said there was a previous owner, did he put in a centerforce clutch by any chance? They are pretty noisy!!

With the stock shifter I got a little whine from 2nd. With the GenX; 1st, 4th, and 5th whine - 2nd and 3rd howl - and neutral chatters a little. I'm yet to put on the Centerforce (Don't have the C-A tool yet).

If your transmission is too loud, your exhaust is too quiet...:p

Mine also seems to be fine.....Hope everything is o-k.....

Or your music isn't loud enough :dontknow: :D

Thank you Fst Jack...I will do a fluid change on the tranny and see if that helps. It is very possible that the sound may be normal...but I did not notice it before...again, I was sitting inside the truck prior to the oil change so I wouldn't have noticed.

Marc T...I doubt the previous owner put a centerforce clutch on it...hell, the guy didn't even have the oil change post "break-in" period. Was still the oriiginal factory oil. AAAAAAHHHHHHH!!!!

I think you guys are right...I need a louder exhaust! :)

Thanks for all the help!!! I too hope it is nothing major. I will try to hook up with Robert (MoparConnection) or Taylor (SCVette) and see what they think.

Doing a fluid change to RedLine D4 or GM Syncromesh will not help the noise situation but will help shifting especially when cold.
