I'm going to the track March 31 to make some 1/4 mile runs with my 10 for the 1st time. My truck is a bone stock '05 RC with a K&N drop in filter.
My stock tires are Continentals & I need to know what you guys set your tire pressure at the track? I also need to know what RPM's you guys leave the line @ with those 6-speed trucks. I have been told 22 psi. in the tires & launch @ 2000 RPM's....... What does your truck like?

Thats probably as close as you will get to a decent launch. Expect 60' times around 2.10 to 2.20:driver::driver:

launching these beasts takes practice!! i found that you need to leave at 2500 rpm and only spin the tires a couple turns , once the tires grab ,squeeze the throttle . shift to 2nd fast at about 5600 then make sure you are in 3rd prior to flooring it again! 3rd is hell!!!! either it is missed completely or it is back in first!!! ..... I can hardly contain myself!!!!

2200 is about right...a couple of chirp, chirp, chirps...then it's to the floor...

i power shift, gas flat around 5000rpms, a quick tap of the clutch pedal, so the blip in the throttle doesn't hit the limiter...

that works for me...

very similar to trainman...though he shifts at the limiter, it seems like...but this works for me...and i'm very consistent...

that's what i do...

Watch my shifting video in this section....although that is with drag radials, and a bit more power than you will have. The video will show full power shifts at 6000 rpm....takes practice....I've been power shifting since the mid 60's, so lots of practice.

Sorry if im sidetracking the thread but just want to ask a question that i think might benifit you aswell, Ralph.

Trainman. i must be missing something. is there a trick you have to learning this shifting style. It cant be as simple as slam the clutch, shift as fast as you can without taking your foot off the throttle........is it:dontknow:

You say it takes lots of practice. how can i practice without hurtin the clutch?
Is ot necassary to have an aftermarket shifter to do this or will the stock shifter work.
should you practice say at 3000rpms, so if you miss you dont hurty anything, and only practice 1-2 before attempting 3rd (and only 3rd after an aftermarket shifter)

Sorry for all the questions but the video doent teach me anything, just shows me you are a shiftin machine. THATS FAST:burnout::driver:

geo, simple fact is if your powershifting(esp something with this much power) eventually something is going to break. I don't know if trainman has broken anything yet or not on his truck but i'm sure he's probably broken several cars since he's been racing. I learned to powershift with a mustang GT(lot cheaper to break than the truck) and thankfully i havent broken anything on the truck...yet, well other than the clutch pedal like 4-5 times:eek:

It pretty much is that simple. An after market shifter with a shorter handle than stock is also necessary. Even at 3000 you can damage gears if you catch them halfway. I have broken rear ends and clutches before , but no transmissions. I'm 64 years old and have been shifting since about 1964 (my senior year of high school)....so I've had lots of practice, but I always had kind of a knack for it even when I was younger.

Good deal guys, I am guna add up what trainman/arrestme said together and conclude i am not going to try it:(

I dont take my truck to the track much plus i dont want any of the expencive repais if i jack somethin up.

I am intereted to see some numbers Ralph, good luck and be safe.:burnout:

hey jerry,

does your truck kinda feel like it falls flat after 53-5400 rpms? when i go to the track, i always "no-lift-shift" but shift around 5200...so the blip in throttle never hits the limiter...

i have the stock shifter, and have had no issues powershifting...(or is it not considered powershifting if you're not at the limiter?)

obviously, everyone has there own style...and some people just can't do it...

I agree, changing to a short throw shifter is a must to power shift these trucks. The stock shifter design will break parts. I know I will leave a little on the table when shifting the truck but atleast I will bring it home in one piece.
It looks like a friend of mine on the board is letting me use his slicks to make a few passes. :)

using slicks instead of drag radials on a set of oem spider gears without having them cryoed can granade your rear end ,,make sure you launch at a lower rpm ,,many have trashed their rearend with slicks ;) try to shift a stock truck at 5000 to 5200 rpm ,,that is the top power range for them

My peak horsepower is at 5600 rpm (on the dyno), and to answer your question....no , I don't feel a flat spot. Watch the shifting video that SRTBrad put up and watch the tach face and see if you think it's falling flat.

I've watched the video several times... I can't tell... I mean... It climbs to 6k but on the dyno the tq and hp on mine were just starting to drift downwards at 5300...Mine's all just a buncha noise from 5500+... No real gain in momentum, if that makes sense...

I'm sure your heads are the benefactor from the porting on the high end...I guess...

Same here. Hp peak is just after 5500 rpm.
Curious, where does your Torque start to drop at? My peak Tq is about 4300 rpm.

My truck has 58,700 miles and I have never removed the valve covers....heads are pure stock as the day they were new. Same with the cam and block, pistons, rods and oiling system. All I have is the BBK and a ported intake. But I was shifting at 6000 rpm before I had the ported intake. I have also been setting the standard for NA Viper trucks since about 2006 when I ran a 12.64 at full weight with nothing more than a tune, headers and drag radials. Once I started getting some serious competition from Justin (ArrestMeRed)...we started having fun and getting into weight reduction and other tricks.....current NA ET record is 11.98 sec. and current NA speed record is 118.15 mph.
