I'm picking up a new PCM and trying to decide which tune to go with. I have 93 Octane readily available to me but I DO NOT want to deal with any detonation issues. I have an 04 RC with a Magnaflow Catback and a K&N intake. I will be upgrading to Catless mids in the very near future. Any advice would be greatly appreciated. I already called B&G and got some good info, I just wanted to see what the consensus was here with guys (or gals) who have either tune installed.

You can get 91 anywhere, so if a long trip is in order, wouldn't you want to be safe :dontknow:

thankyou for asking this , i will be ordering mine in a week and was going to ask the same thing. what did b@g say. and would it hurt to run 93 if programmed for 91?

No it won't hurt to run a higher octane on the 91 tune. But you might get some pinging if you burn 91 on a 93 tune. The 93 tune is slightly more aggressive. Another question. Are the '04 and '05 RC PCM's the same?

When I purchsaed mine from DC, I told them 93 is everywhere in my area and that's what I use. To date I've heard no pinging whatsoever.

Even if I was planning on a long trip where 93 was not available, chances are you'll be cruising the highway and octane won't much matter anyway.
IMO, You only need the octane for WOT.:)

Get the 93 and if you have pinging DC can dial back the timing a little for you. I don't know if PCM are different for 04 and 05's.

I'm probably going with the 93 tune, its not my daily driver and I can always run 93 and a bottle of octane boost as insurance. The big question is are the 05 PCM and tune identical and compatible. SilverSRT10 is willing to sell me his but its for an 05 RC??

Stick, B&G said that its a matter of personal prefrence. He said the 93 tune is great but if your really worried about knocking or pinging, stay with the 91. The 93 has a more advanced timimg curve and agressive fuel map (translation-advanced timing and leaner fuel condition). I would rather run the 93 tune as all the stations have 93 rather then 91 with the exeption of Shell (they have both). If I'm putting 93 in at every fill up then I might as well get more bang for my buck.

.

I called Boomer last year and asked the same question. A guy was selling an 05 pcm and I have an 04. He said they were not compatable.

I'll confim this tomorrow with B&G. He did ask me if I had an 05 or 04 when I called him earlier today. I imagine that if they were compatible he wouldn't have asked this as it would be a mute point.

Yeah I know. I was bummed to hear it too as I had a line on a used one for $300!!! :(

The way I understand it also is when you buy a used one you have to send it back to get the vin # re flashed.....thats another $100 or $150.

We have 94 octane here which I pretty much HAVE TO use during the hotter summer days (say 80 degrees and up) otherwise I will get some ping with my quad cab. 92 octane pings like a bitch in warm weather. And that is at 3800 feet, so the condition (with my truck anyway) is more severe at lower altitudes... I'm not sure what the altitude is where you are....I have the stage 2 flash...

Do you have the 170 degree thermostat installed? It is my understanding that this should help the knock/ping issue some. I live in New England and am unsure of the altitude? I dont mind dumping a bottle of Octane boost in at every fill up. Whats another three bucks when I'm spending $60 - $70 per fillup! I've got another line on a tuned PCM, this one with the 93 tune for an 04 RC. My goal is to get a theoretical 600 hp at the crank. I figure the K&N intake and Magnaflow cat-back I have now with the addition of a tuned PCM and catless mids should do the trick!!! THen its off to the track next spring where I have a two buddies, one with a SRT-8 Magnum with extensive mods (custom PCM tune, headers, high flow cats, cutouts etcc...) and a stock SRT-8 Grand Cherokee. The SRT-8 Magnum hit 12.9 in the quarter recently and the Cherokee is a track virgin so far. It should be good but this and the other mods are the insurance I need to make sure I dont get beat by the stock SRT-8 Cherokee, I should have the Magnum!!

I have a one off early prototype B & G flash, Dave installed it in my truck before the Stage II was done. I like it, but on a very hot day with hi engine temps it will ping under heavy load, even with 93 octane. I believe Dave backed the timing down a little from what I have so if you have 93 octane you will not have a problem.

Bill.

just got my stage 2 back from b&g,and maiu/srt10 is right cost 150.00 to get it reprogramed for my truck.man that thing is sweet fells like i have a whole new truck, and i only use 93 octane even before the stage 2,and so far no pinging.

No I didn't change the t. stat. The weather here is up and down like a yo yo; a.c. one day and the heater the next. It was +4 here Monday and right now it is -26.

Yeah the SRT-8 Grand Cherokees, SRT-8 Chargers, Magnums, 300s all seem to be close to each other. With some mods or a very good running stocker they are 13.8 at 102 or 103 m.p.h. at our local track (same as my QC). Our local track is at 3750 feet (corrected is almost always 5000+) This 13.8 @ 103 is also true for the 400 horse Z06 'Vettes. These cars are 2100 lbs. lighter than a reg. cab SRT-10 !! 400 horsepower eh? Yeah, sure.....

Have fun at the track and remember that an SRT8 Grand Cherokee is still around 1200 lbs. lighter than a reg. cab SRT-10

I have the Stage II for 93 octane but i run 91 most of the time and have no pinging problems because the 05s have a factory knock sensor which retards the timming when needed. (91 is the higest octane sold at the pumps here) If i want more performance i can still buy racing and benefit from the Stage II.
