Saturday night at 12.30 pm I got the call from my brother that my father had passed away. Six hours earlier he had been rushed from the assisted living facility (which has been his home since May) for breathing problems. The paramedics were able to stablilize him and get him to the hospital. Eventually he had been given a room and my sister stayed with him not willing to leave. At 6.30 am his heart gave out and he stopped breathing. His passing was so peaceful that my sister Mary did not even know he had passed. A nurse had to come in and tell her what had happened. We are all very thankfull God has shown mercy and taken dad this way. He had been fighting tongue/throat cancer since December. Just late last month we had found out the cancer had spread to his lungs and the other side of his tongue. The doctors told us there was nothing else they could do to the battle the cancer except control the pain. My father took the news with disappointment. He had hoped he could beat this.

My father was a graduate of West Point class of 1954. He served two tours of Vietnam and loved this country. I dont think he ever missed a day to hang the American Flag outside his home. He was married to my mom for 50 years and has 5 children and 5 grandchildren. He was a great dad whom I give credit with my mom for my success in life. I have always felt I was one of the "lucky ones" to have the parents that I have.

My mom was told of the news on Sunday, but with her condition we dont really know how much she understood. Her cancer has really affected her short term memory. She sleeps most of the day now and has very limited lucid moments. I feel she has been hanging on for my father. I would not be surprised is she passes soon too. She has been living at the same facility with my father since May.

I am getting on a plane on Tuesday to go to VA. Its going to be very sad, but I am trying to celebrate my father's life. I am thankful that his suffering is over.

You guys are the best here so I wanted to share this you all. Many of you have pm'd me this year so many times about my parents and I appreciate it so much. Here are some pics of my parents. They were taken last November when I was visiting them. First one is with my brothers daugher Ashley. The second one is with me and my older sister Dede.

Rest in Peace Dad, I love you.

Lt. Colonel Thomas Nugent Ret.

May God bless your Father and all of your family in this time of need and always.

When I read your post earlier I thought something like this had happened. From all the the PM's you and I have tradded over the last year I know this is both sad and yet a relief. Your Dad was loved by you and the rest of the family. And your parents bond with each other was strong. It was evident in the way they wanted to be together in the same room at the hospital. My thoughts are with you and you family during this time Patrick. Although I'm not in Norfolk anymore, my wife is there. So if you need a ride or even need someone to pick up some flowers please let me know.

Smoke

First off, thoughts and prayers are with you and your family at this trying time.

I believe you have the right attitude. Celebrate your fathers life, don't mourn his passing. He is in a better place of which we will all be together in at some point. Remember the good times, the funny things that happened. Those are the important things. Remember those during this time and that is what you will always remember until you join him.

Take care Patrick.

My sincerest condolences to you and your family Patrick.
