Any secrets when replacing spark plug wires?

Ok @2005ViperRam with the number 2 Avatar hahaha ( what’s the deal with these Avatar profile numbers anyway ).

Have you done the plug wires yet ? Ronnie’s DIY is the only option and all the info about doing the wires and replacing the coil packs . Pretty much that’s the only way to do the job at least the first time unless you can come up with a decent good looking way to relocate the coil pack from under the manifold and not have to worry about the wire or coil replacements again l ;) Which I would really like to see someone relocate the coils !

Without a doubt manufactures are making it more and more of a pain to work on anything ..
Check out replacing the Crank position sensor on a 2002 dodge Dakota for instance cost me 205$ to have it replaced I couldn’t even see the damn thing or feel following the wires to it ( 2 bolts and wire connector hahaha .. even the oil filter is in tighter than a witches __ ! The distributor is also stuffed in the back of the engine set in low and tight to the firewall big hands make it a pain to change the wires or even the cap and rotor and even small hands would be a pain ... not even sure about trying to replace the distributor haha ! ( 3.9 litre engine )
at least with the Hemi ( haven’t looked at the new day Hemi’s but we know in the old days it was simple and didn’t hardly have to bend over to change the plugs and wires or most everything for a tune up ( those were the days , well we expected that from stinking fords on some plugs hahaha !
IMO , anything that would make a job get done easier and faster is a heck of a lot better for everyone . I started doing that to my last 340 duster and made it so much easier even back then to work on it . But I did extensive work from the engine compartment completely redid the dash in Stainless steel and. All gauges replaced with liquid Autometer gauges , toggle switch console panel to the rear wheel tubs , eliminated the power steering system and on and on. I eliminated everything to make it easier to work on and eliminate the pain in the butt things.

GIVE ME THE OLD DAYS , I’m now to damn old to get off the floor without something to grab and pull myself up damn it HAHAHA !

I have heard of those with small(er) fingers and/or a pair of those 20" long pliers claiming to have replaced plug wires on these engines without pulling the Intake.
Here is the coil pack numbering if you are feeling lucky.

I heard that also .. Didn’t know about those pliers .. and I’m not that adventurous to try ..
maybe cutting off the part that covers the coils is a option hahaha. JB weld to put it back together ,, Hmmmm hahaha

I’m sure you’ve seen or heard about kids trying to stick their arm into a Coke machine to steal a coke and get their arms stuck hahaha .. call the fireman and grease the kidss arm and pull hahaha . I have seen it happen .. the kid was crying and embarrassed to no end while people were laughing their asses off at his stupidity….
It is much or was easier to snag a free Coke by grinding a penny down to the size of a dime hahaha ! And you got change back .

Haha, yup.

I'd be concerned about snapping a coil tower or disturbing the coils' electrical connector.
I guess it would be doable otherwise.

An access "door" would be cool - @VIPR PWR - a new project for you to design!

The Avatar (generic) uses the first character of the user name is my Guess! Lol

Makes sense .. but I’m not going to mess with the coils or wires until absolutely necessary hahaha .. or call Ronnie for a road trip to florida hahaha

What's a penny? A dime??? Hahahaha do kids even know what coins are anymore? They just know the ebt card

Curious about the factory coils compared to after markets .. like the screamin demons …. Is there really a benefit over the factory or is it just the cool name factor ?

He could tell Old Colt you're gonna trade him headlights when they get there :p:p:p

You're safe though Cuz they won't fit he he

I'm going to guess cool factor. I'm thinking the factory engineers might have known what works best but then you know I'm not up on any mods! Hahahaha

That appears to be correct .. Heck I almost never use cash , I have maybe 30$ in my wallet that been there for 10 years hahaha .

Hahaha , yes I read about that ..

I tend to use the o.e.m. ignition parts and haven't had much luck with aftermarket ignition stuff such as Accel and MSD with reliability being the main issue.
You are likely aware if a coil has 150,000 volts to work with but the plug only required 9,357 (for example) to fire, then that is all it will take from the coil.
Many people think a 150,000 volt coil fires at 150K every time.
That wouldn't be the case.
9357 from an o.e.m. coil or an ignition system from Thor is the same in practical use.
Now if you are using forced induction with big boost and exotic fuels running a high rpm it IS physically harder for a spark to jump the gap and light the mix. In that case some extra (reserve) fire-power may be helpful.

Not sure what those outputs are compared to years ago with the big yellow Accel super coils and then the MSD controllers can out ..
I believe the claim was an output to 40 volts then with the MSD controller you somewhere around 4 sparks at or around idle and up to 20 sparks when you get it going .. all I know is the set up I used then , both was definitely a multi shocker hahaha .. Just remember volts don’t kill Amps do and make crispy critters hahaha ! There are exceptions to the volt situation though.

My Mopar MSD boxes each lasted around 3000 miles.
Those Supercoils looked cool, I thought, and used one on my Hemi-Charger prior to switching the dual-point to the Direct Connection Electronic Ignition conversion setup. That was the BEST thing for the 426. I kept some of the plugs that were done at around 1500 miles with the dual-point and reinstalled them after switching to electronic. They worked fine and went on to reliably ignite the leaded Premium at 6500 rpm for several thousand more miles!

Back in my Mechanic day 6 lifetimes ago haha .. at the shop working on cars , tune ups .. yes point ignitions , remember those haha .well if a nosey person bothered you we alway kept a old condenser sitting on the work cart or on the fender cover .. yes it was charged up . To get rid of the nosey person we would just ask them to hand me that condenser .. it was a shocking experience to say the least ..hahaha !

Yes I also switched the Mopar electronic ignition set up from Direct connection , the distributor and all . Then ai decided to put the MSD brain box in place of the Mopar brain box and replaced the super coil with the MSD Blaster coil .. never had a problem with ignition .
I also used the Accel spark plugs .

My MSD boxes used the 5-pin plug used by the Electronic Ignition box from Mopar. When they failed, they needed to be shipped to Texas for repair. Not the kind of fun I was expecting.
Accel plugs worked fine.

It’s to bad Mopar Direct connection went away .. they had great info and parts setups to make a specific power for different racing categories .. like the Bracket racing 12 second kits recommendations .. prices then were affordable. I bought the first cam called the Purple shaft from them .. something like a 292 lift maybe on both intake and exhaust and the overlap I can’t remember .. I also bought the offset cam keys and adjustable roller time gears and chain .. the purple shaft ran like crap and idled like crap no matter what I did . It was to much something for the street . So ai changed to a more recommended Sig Erson cam and that was perfect ..I also found a complete adjustable set of rocker arm and pushrods on a 273 cid which are interchangeable with all the small block mopars and installed them , the guy gave the to me for free . The 273’s had mechanical cams and were not able to be used unless the oil galleries were modified I read . I used the anti pump up Rhodes lifters and they were great also especially since I could then adjust the rocker clearance..
