What options do we have for replacement axles? My wheel flanges wobble the tires! driverside worse than the passengerside. but both need replacing! :dontknow::shot::shot::(:(
 
Axles are probably OK. No good replacements without buying a complete DTS rearend. I would check the axle bearings first.
 
hmm... what am i looking for? what should i expect to see with the bearings? i had the axles out when i replaced the spider gears. they looked ok??:confused:
 
I not a gear head but i was always told play in the wheel at a 12 & 6 direction (if you grab the tire at the very top and bottom just like on a clock) is ok but if you have lots of play in the 3 & 9 direction then its your axel bearings. Oh and by lots of play would b more than a 1/8 of an inch.

I am sure more will chime in with more experience and knowledge.
 
Any of the major axle companies will build you axles if you send them a sample. I still think that a guy needs to change the axle ends to match a Ford axle. Then we can run smaller diameter rear brakes to fit proper drag radials.
 
If they are bent they sure will. Put the truck on jackstands, pull the wheels off and put a dial indicator on the flanges. Turn the axle by hand and watch the dial. Then you will know for sure.
 
if the wheels aren't flat against the hub, the wheels will wobble

check for rust/corrison on the hub & wheel & make sure the centerin hub is clean, both axle & wheel.

can be a tight fit on the centerin hub
 
I have been chasing vibrations and noticed the same thing. When it was up in the air. Ran with with tires on and just then just rotors and was noticing a wobble. When the truck is on the ground and running down the highway they run true. Tech though it was a seperated ply. Tires were checked and they are ok. Still has slight vibration but F-it I'll live with it.

Why are replacing the flanges? Is it vibrating? If you are driving down the road you can see the driver's side tire in the mirror. The passneger side not so much. Someone else will have to look or drive so you can look at the wheel.

Anyone else have ideas on this. I asked a tech and he said it may be becasue the bearings are weighted when it is on the ground which is why they run true and when it is up in the air they are not so you see it dancing a bit. Any credence to this or BS. I would be interested to see if anyone else would mind putting the ass end on jack stands and then running the truck to see if the rear wheels wooble side to side a bit.
 
Looks pretty obvious to me, as long as there is no contamination on the flange where the indicator is touching.

Better pull them out and send them to Moser or Strange to have some better ones built. Too bad Im not at this stage yet Norbert, I do plan on rebuilding my axle myself but changing over the housing ends and brakes.
 
I doubt it's bearings as you would hear the roar that accompanies them! It indeed sounds like the axle flanges are bent and after working in the Body Shop for Dodge several years after the invent of factory 20" wheels I saw my share of damaged control arms, as well as rear axles due to the strain the 22" and 20" put on the axle flange. Now, don't get me wrong, they are absolutely fine under normal driving and even drag racing, it's the potholes, curbs, etc. that make them give. Basically it's a leverage thing and the 22" versus a 17" will create a lot more side deflection on an axle flange. I know Justin ( ArrestMeRed) has had this issue for a few years and not messed with it.:dontknow:
 
I have had mine up in the air and noticed this same wobbling as is shown in the video. However, when it is on the road and driving I do not see the wheels wobbling. Is this (what is shown in the videos) a normal condition or should it be replaced? Also, why would it wobble in the air but not when loaded on the ground and driving? If the axle flange is bent should it not wobble regardless?

I have my truck at the shop now and am considering having it looked at again. Not to get on a rant but the truck spends more time at the dealer than my driveway.
 
Well the axle about an inch or so behind the flange is where it is bent! Basically right at the bearing. The whole flange wobbles . After installing stinker's lowering kit I didn't cut the bumpstops . Wasn't in the instructions , and jumped a couple pot holes . Hit them pretty hard! That's when I call stinker and he told me to cut the bumpstops! Smoothed the ride out great! Hell, just last weekend on my way home I hit a ridge in the pavement on the yellowhead and hit my head on the ceiling of the truck! Roads are rough around here ! Lol
 
Did you notice a vibration or problem after the pot holes? Just curious what led you to start looking at the rear axles.

Oh yeah and bumpstops bottoming out on the axle. The leftover force gets exerted on the wheels themselves.

yea a slight vibration ! and then i looked in the rear view and notice the tire wobble! driverside i was getting stopped by followers to tell me i had a bad tire! so i purchased new tires and had them installed ! the wobble was still there!!! i really didn't believe these axles would bend like that! i believed it was the tires!
 
Thanks for the response. Sorry you got a deal with the bent axles. I may have a similar issue just not as pronounced. I appreciate the info.
