I'm looking to get a new shifter and it seems everyone either has a B&M or X-Metal, which one is best? Now with this I'm not concerned about price, both are relatively equal, B&M being a little cheaper. Also what is the difference in the gens of X-Metal shifters? I go to their site and there isn't anything specifying what gen it is or what's the difference. Thanks for any info:rock:

Gen-X is the latest/final shifter from X-Metal but finding one new will be hard. Not sure if Boomer (Gary) still sells them and he's not a favoruite user around here, with the dealings I had with him, I can see why. Best bet is to lurk around the for sale section if you're after an X-Metal shifter. In my opinion there is no "best" when it comes to personal preference. They'll both do a better job than the stock shifter. You'll be happy with either or IMO.

I have a B&M and love it, but as Carlwalski said, its all in the personal preference

Can any of the shifters use the stock Hurst handle to keep the stock appearance?

My understanding is yes. This is what I'm going to do. I like the knob just don't like missing 3rd all the damn time.

spacemonkey, I am working on better pricing for the B@M shifter but right now I think I can get it for ya for around $250 plus whatever shipping would be:)

yes the hurst knob screws straight onto the b and m shifter
what a diffrence you will find when you get the new shifter in ...

I have both a zmetal, and a B&M. I like the B&M better as the zmetal has an odd twist when going through the neutral gates, also much louder.
Both shifters will transfer some transmission noise but the B&M is the quieter of the two.

I am using the stock hurst handle on the B&M shifter, I cut it down about 3 inches and redrilled the mounting holes, about a 15 minute job to do this.

If you are still running the stock factory or factory type lube in the transmission you will see a tremendous differance by going to RedLine D4 fully synthetic or GM syncromesh fluid. The trans will shift much better, especially when cold. The factory fluid looks & smells like it came from the bottom of the black lagoon, really ickey stuff.

A fluid change if its still on the factory fluid, and a B&M shifter will put a big smile on your face.

I agree
Mobil 1 ATF works really well also

If you want either of those shifters to be 100% quiet, just do the simple mod that I have posted.

Bill.

Which mod would that be Bill? I was looking back at your previous posts and I think it's the master cylinder upgrade?

you may have to pm him , I cant remember where it is, but one good thing about the new B@M shifter is it comes with a steel shifter lever, the aluminum levers are the ones that made the most noise, I think the newer ones are pretty quiet

Tony, Do you have a way of getting the steel shifter arm? I have one of the early versions of the B&M with the aluminum arm. Would like to switch it out if possible.
