Got this in an email, and admittedly I haven't check the validity, but given the times and the way people are, I can believe it! Better to be aware than in trouble!

INFO FROM A STATE TROOPER....PLEASE READ!!!!!

A woman said her son found his license plate missing so he called the police to file a report. They told him people were stealing the plates to get free gas. Given the rise in gas prices, people have taken to stealing license plates, putting them on their car, then getting gas and running. The gas station will have 'your' license plate # and you could be in trouble for 'pump and run.' Check your car periodically to be sure you still have a plate. If you should find it missing, file a report immediately!!! Keep an eye on your license plate! Make sure you always know it's there! When the license plate is reported as the 'drive off vehicle', it's YOU they contact! Be aware!!!! Be aware of your license plates, most of us never look to see if the plates are there or not.

Meh! I started thinking about this, and then realized that while it is a valid concern there is no need to be panicky about it. There are VERY few stores that allow you to pump gas before offering payment anymore.

if this is true or not, people are going to do some stupid things for gas.
 
Yea, around here they just poke a hole in the gas tank and drain it

Thats what i did about 6 months ago after several vehicles in my town were missing plates...i have no plates on my truck anymore...the reg is still valid of course, i just carry the plate behind my seat.
 
Another simple solution and one I've been using on my cars for a few years now is Epoxy in the screw holes. Fill around the screw, it sets and the screw is set in place. It can be removed if wanted to but it's hard as hell and can't be done in 5-10minutes, they'll soon go on to the next car or be caught in the act, for a plate, they've move straight on, not worth the risk.

The Epoxy resin is clear and looks normal. Just make sure it's the plate you want lol. Mine are personalised plates, once purchased, they remain on. Getting them off is a little tricky and requires some skilled hacksaw work but like I said, easily done in your own time. Be sure to make sure it's the plates you want. No one will be stealing my plates. ;)

You can also use license plate screws that take a "security" bit.

We've had all kinds of interesting stuff going on around here. The punch a hole stuff, and let the rest drain out on the ground (and let the owner take care of the HAZMAT cleanup), and guys driving up to gas stations at night and pumping directly out of the tanks into drums in the back of a truck!

I heard that if you go to a strange town (this must be in California..lotsa astrange towns there) and get drunk, pick up a hooker and bring her back to your hotel, you might end up in a bathtub full of ice missing a kidney..It must be true..I got the story from an email that was sent to me by a deposed dictator from Kenya who had money he wanted to send me to hide for him because of the revolution taking place. All I had to do was send him my bank acct numer so he could deposit the money..And hey, he is ex government so if you cant trust him, you cant trust anyone..lol..

Thanks for that. You typed what I was thinking.

If someone steals your plate, so what? The cops are going to show up at your house and see that your vehicle is missing a plate. Unless the crook put the stolen plate on a similar vehicle and he/she looks just like you it doesn't mean crap. Even then it has to be proved you did it. Without a valid description of the vehicle to go along with the plate # it does not mean much. What if the attendant got the plate wrong? Plus alot of gas stations have cameras which will capture things like this.

Translation. Urban legend.
