Best Guitarist of all time

So, after posting so many different opinions here, I'd just like to add that (overall) Rinehardt is still (all things considered) the yardstick for everyone else. His musical genius (even though a complete illiterate) His mechanic (even though the doctors were going to amputate his left hand due to burns- essentially Django only had 2 functioning fingers) his being so many years ahead of his time...... And of course, his flat out improvisational wizardry are still unmatched by most of our contemporary guitarists.... especially with respect to his musicality..... He was a Picasso, Einstein, Van Gogh (name your genius here) all rolled into one....... And an original Romany gipsy.

Django is it............. the original..... Ask any of those players listed here.... it all traces back to Django and Stephane: 1934-5.

OK, here endeth the rant/guitar history lesson from the old man.

I had never listened to Django Reinhardt prior to reading this.

Absolutely unbelievable. I've not been this impressed musically in a very long time..probably since first hearing Robert Johnson.

Thanks from all Django lovers. When I first heard Django, I fkn cried. No horseshit.

The problem with Djangology Today is that neophites may listen once and say "big deal".... The reason is that, in Django's time, he was so revered that he couldn't sit down to play without someone setting down a mic and piece of recording equipment.

As a result, there are hundreds of Django recordings that aren't worth listening to. But, the early stuff from 1934-5 with Stephane Grapelli is full of righteous riffs and astounding musicality from both men.... Together, it was nitro/glycerine.

Today, the mantle is secure on the shoulders of young Joscho Stefan. He's a purist and using what he learned from Django, he has certainly surpassed the master mechanically. The musicality comparison can only be measured over a career/lifetime.... Joscho is just a kid.

How about Joscho and Tommy together......?

Ya gotta listen close... shit sound.

Dear cousin Joe:

"Terse" is only one weapon in the offensive weapons cache.

I greatly prefer cordiality and reason. Especially under these circumstances.

Perhaps I was a bit pissy..........

Sorry.

For decades, Chet was called "The World's Greatest Guitar Player". He adamantly shunned the title saying that the greatest guitarist is someone you never heard of who sits in his room 12 hours a day and does nothing but study and play.

He was right.

The greatest player is probably this ugly, zit faced, recluse type kid whose playing is so brilliant that its rare to find someone who can even understand it. He will never become famous because his playing is so advanced that it lacks the ability to create commercial revenue......

He will (regrettably and most probably) die in obscurity..........

BTW, Chet said of all the known players that Django was certainly it. The reason was that Django rewrote the book. He was the foundation upon which all great players (granted, of Chet's era) had built.

I was just kind of surprised that his name hadn't been mentioned in this thread up until I threw his name out there for consideration in post #50.

A lot of "The younger generation" may not have even heard of him.

I hear ya' talkin'.... loud n clear.

I wasn't aware that he'd gone unmentioned........... Chet and Les Paul were both beyond guitarists. They were institutions.
