RAVENA, N.Y. — Authorities say a 25-year-old upstate New York man has been arrested after troopers clocked him driving his motorcycle at 170 mph on the Thruway.

State police say a trooper first observed the motorcyclist going 166 mph Wednesday afternoon in the southbound lanes of Interstate 87 just south of Albany. The trooper pursued the biker and was able to get the Suzuki motorcycle's license plate number and a description of the rider when he slowed down in traffic.

But the man sped off again, and other troopers clocked him going as fast as 170 mph. Troopers eventually stopped him in New Paltz.

Police charged Nikkolaus McCarthy of Charlton with fleeing police, reckless driving, speeding and operating a motorcycle without a license.

He was being held in jail on $20,000 bail. It couldn't immediately be determined if he had a lawyer.

i'd be scared to do that on a bike. atleast in a truck i have the cab to offer some protection... that guys got some balls, he's a total dumbass but he's got balls

i've only seen 145 on a bike... 929rr... but 160+ in a car... honestly... as stable as the bike was... all i could think was damn this is gonna be a lotta rash if i drop it...(i was in shorts and a tshirt)... but in the car at 165 all i could think of was if a groundhog runs in front of me, i'm dead, lol...

As a loooong time rider i can say, Yes 170mph is fast and VERY dangerous to do on public highways but not an uncommon thing. My 06 CBR600RR went just over 160+ and i hit that rev limit a few times...But now that i have a family to support and love i no longer own a bike because i would definitly push my limits the first chance i got

145 in shorts?? whoa thats frickin nuts!!!!!!! :dontknow:

i rolled a old ford that was set up for quarter mile runs, 10.5 slicks out back and a blown 460. doin 160 down a two lane black top runnin about 165 the tranny locks up. apparently it wasnt filled with enough fluid and the bearing in the back of the case just siezed up? not 100 percent sure but thank god it had a full roll cage and i had a 5 point on. that just aint no joke.

Damn 170 is fast as hell.

Fastest i've been is 145 in the truck.
And 125 with my shifter kart with my ass 1" off the ground. :D

188 mph on my ZZR 1100. Nice tunnel vision at that speed and cars come close very fast. :burnout:
Although braking is no problem. Just close the throttle and sit straight up and in a blink of an eye your at 100 mph... :D

I've had my ZX9R up in the 180mph when I had it when I was younger,it's amazing how fast things come up on you!! Seems like its a mile a second! And like he said when you sit up( make sure ur helmet is done up and your holding on tight) you sure slow down fast!

+1 Both of my SRT8's would do 170 plus (not with me driving though) and all I could think about was how much I hoped a deer didn't step out in front of me.

I hit 203mph! on a Gsxr-1000 :D

Dude, that is insane. I've ridden up around 130 and it was terrifying. Bike got a death wobble and really thought I was going to die.

I love it! The only bad thing is if you don't have a aria or a helmet of quality you head shakes so bad it's ridicules. 160 club is crazy but when I checked off 180 I found it hard to breath lol.

This begs the question how fast have you gone in your T10???..myself only 90 but I'm working on a plan.

Ive done 177 on a 2005 R6 im sure it was only 160ish speedo corrected. Many close calls too and my buddy passed away last year after a van cut in front of him. Hung my helmet up for good.
