Building a 48re

Also installed transmission cooler thermostat delete kit.

Nice job ... hows the shifting in all gears now ....
Feels way better. I figured this would buy me some more time before she needs a full rebuild. I also got me a spare transmission, which will eventually get a full rebuild, torque converter, mishimoto transmission cooler.

Whats the purpose of deleting the thermostat ?
The 3rd Gen Dodge transmission coolers are notorious for having the transmission cooler thermostat stick in the "bypassed" position, causing high operating temperatures. The thermostat delete kit completely seals off the bypass tube.
 
Feels way better. I figured this would buy me some more time before she needs a full rebuild. I also got me a spare transmission, which will eventually get a full rebuild, torque converter, mishimoto transmission cooler.
I would think the thermostat is more of a protection in case the trans temp overheats which sends a signal to the ECM AND DOES WHATEVER IT DOES LOL ... Unless its for a temperature gauge !
 
Everything listed above was me just doing alot of research and looking at what the diesel guys have been doing for years. They have been pushing these things to the limits, the last one I seen was over 4K RWHP. So I would think they know what there doing.

I can see that happening so it may good idea ,,, but even without it would you have any protection or signals that would let you know of a overheating contion without it ? Is it going to trigger some code and the idiot light comes on lol ?

Research is good , no doubt about it .... 4K HP is massive ... but for the street or race only ?

Yea more of a protection, this is closer to the cooler. The gauge port I have is in my transmission pan.

No shouldn’t trigger anything. Your gauge cluster has a light that is triggered when your transmission gets hot, I believe it reads check gauges.

Just wanted to update the thread. Decided to hold off on my rebuild, the only issue I was having was I would have to release the gas pedal to get it to shift into 2nd from 1st. Upgrade a lot of components in the valve body with Sonnax parts, DNJ governor pressure solenoid, 47re transducer, 727 front band, transmission cooler thermostat delete kit and transgo shift kit.

I bought a Transgo shift kit for my '71 Hemi Charger so they have been around a while. In 1973 the Transgo kit was $13.00 but they have likely gone up since then. ;)

My 48RE got a band from a 1971 727 (Chrysler New Yorker: 440). Those bands could actually be sent away for relining and are meaty.

In comparison, it looks like the o.e.m. band for the 48RE is lined by using an aerosol spray.

Anyhow, burnouts should be done with the shifter in #1 (a.k.a. Manual Low) because that applies the band and is considerably stronger than 1st gear in the Drive position (when the band is NOT applied).
Manual Low also ensures it won't jump into 2nd coming out of the waterbox at the races (for example), as that sends the running-clutch into orbit. That is not a very good thing.

But you likely know that.
Maybe someone on here does not.

You have to watch the engine revs though ,,,, it runs up fast lol
