Busted Bolt, Need Some Help

Had a bolt snap when putting on the headers today. Was torquing them down and one let loose. Passenger side rear top bolt (next to firewall). So far I drilled a hole in it and used an ez-out. That fugger snapped too. I am at my wits end at this point. Anybody have any tips or tricks to getting this bitch out?

My last option at this pont is to get an awl and try to get the broken harden steel ez-out piece out and drill the whole a little bigger and try again with a different type of extracter. I am praying not have to drill it all the way out and then have to use a heli-coil. Why does this shit happen?? Damn Murphy, I hate that guy!!!

Thanks well see what happens. I think the hole is slightly off center. Likely cause that the extractor broke. It is in a shitty spot. First thing is getting the busted piece out (tip of the extractor, hardened steel). Then figuring out what to do next. Not fun, not fun at all.

Now, its time for bed and take another crack at it in the morning.

do you still have the manifold on or did you take it off?

if the manifold is still on take it off and then you may be able to get a better grip on it. because have fun drillin out the easy out, if it comes down to that your better off taking off the head. snap on makes the best reversible drill bits in there kit usualy just the reverse drill bit gets em.

Cause it's hardend steel and could make matters a lot worse, just brittle away with drill bit, till ya git to the bolt..............:dontknow: or is that a no winner.....:dontknow:

No the easy out aint comin out your gonna have to drill around it with a smaller drill bit and pray to god you can get it out, or use a pick to try and get the shit out. but if you have a couple threads to grab with vise grips or something of the likes. and plenty of pb blaster or wd thats why I need to know if he took of the header or manifold.

When nothing else will drill hardened steel you can use a carbide tipped concrete drill (a very old machinist trick) just takes some time and patience must get a good one, not Harbour Frieght junk !!!!

Just for an FYI and I was shocked but if worse comes to worse you can get a new set of Heads from napa for about $600 bucks One thing I found out is napa is part of the dealer network and get the OEM shit, at least the one I use does. I found this out trying to get a head gasket it showed the price at 560 for 2 I was like WTF for gaskets then he did some checking and they are oem heads with two gaskets. Hope he got it out.

so you did get the bolt out? a helicoil will be fine as long as you got it out.

No the bolt is still in there. All screwed up with a piece of extractor in there. I am going out now to look for left handed bits and carbide tipped bits to try and drill it out again. It looks like I might be able to drill it pretty much to size and then try re-tapping it. I might get lucky. If this fails then I am going have to get it towed to the dealer and have a buddy of mine work his majic with the right tools at hand. I would like to avoid that but if I have too, I have too.

It is amazing how one f'd up bolt can ruin your whole day. I appreciate the help. That is what makes this site great. I have tried everything you are supposed to do but of course it just does not want to work. The bolt may have bottomed out, I don't see why becasue the others were fine but it is the only thing I can think of that has it so stuck in there. It definetely was not cross threaded either, went in like butter. Only snapped when I was torquing it at 35 ft/lbs. Unbelievable.

I will let you guys know what happens in the end.

I can't help with anything other than what your already doing.Sometimes ,I was able smack the broken extractor with a punch and shatter it,enabling me to remove it in pieces.Then get back at the bolt issue.
