My Z is now at the age where it must be smogged every two years.

OK, fine. I'm all in for clean air, blue skies and crystal waters for our state.

But when my Z flunked the smog test, I had no idea what I was in for. I quickly became intimately familiar with the machinations of a body called CARB. http://www.arb.ca.gov/homepage.htm.

I had alread spent about $400 that I don't have to make my ubiquitous "check engine" light go off and stay that way..... and that's with my official 30% discount from the dealer.....(really nice guys for 12 years). But now my baby had flunked the pipe test because the pre-cats had melted out of one side and destroyed the main cat on that side.... My luck, he tested the drivers side only...

Then I find out that there is no rebuilt or after-market CARB legal catalytic converter for the #300 1996 Nissan 300ZX TT's....NONE....zero, bupkiss, nada, zilch, zero, goose-egg..... Nor will it be legal to produce any in or for the residents of our fair state after July of 2008.

What's left....? A parts waiver. This is the pain in the ass part. You must call the bureau of automotive repair parts locator service, who takes your info and gives you a referal number that you need to hang onto.... (like a case number) These buttholes give you the names and numbers of (in my case) half a dozen companies (sources) with which to request the part needed to pass smog..... (even though everyone familiar with this process knows damn good and well that there's no part cuz they'll soon be illegal anyway).

I called all the numbers they gave me and the names of the people who said "no such part" and soon got 5 more numbers to call....No luck.

I was told that I'd be receiving a call from one of the the bureau heads who would instruct me further. I didn't wanna wait, so I just kept calling the same number and asking for him 'til I succeeded.

This guy called all the numbers that I had called and verified that there is no CARB legal cat for my car.... He mailed (to me) a limited (2 yr) exemption approval and instructed me to call back to the bureau for an appointment with a referee for the State bureau of Automotive Repair....Foundation for California Community Colleges.

I now have to drive to Mira Mar College in San Diego on Tuesday for the purpose of having a college kid named George provide me with an official parts waiver certificate to take to the DMV so I can receive my registration and drive my car for the next two years.....

At which time I get to do this all over again.......

Joyous, eh..............?:congrats:

sounds like fun. let me move to cali.... WAIT!!!! I dont have to, Jersey is doing the same thing in 09!!!!

For now TN leaves it up to the individual counties for smog checks...fortunely the county I live in have none but I know it's coming. My county has been in violation of federal standards for air quality for the last 2 years. So far the only thing the county govenment has done is to request that the state lower the speed limit on I-81 from 70mph to 65mph...which the state did...

They claim this will lower emmision levels enough to pass the federal stds....I dont know how..if you drove 70 on I-81 you would get run over..;)

we have smog testing here in texas but only in the bigger citys.....CARB has to suck man...

Tim sounds like a good time to leave cali, and move to a state that has a clue.

I love California, Earl.

I was born here and have derived much that is very, very good from my life here.... The climate is only really intolerable for a few days of the year (too hot) and I live near the coast for that reason..... Property values (recent history notwithstanding) provide a nice financial benefit. Commerce is usually fairly robust as well.

True, the political scene can be way too left for my liking. But I'm not ready to walk away from California.... Afterall, it's mine ya, know.;)

you need to find one of those guys that'll smog ya for $300... no questions asked :D :marchmellow: :D

besides how do they know if the cat is legal or not... they lift the vehicle?? and check it?? lol... I was pretty sure they just did a sniff test... and voila...

I dunno what I'm going to do for smog.... really only 2 choices... put in some really nice cats or just pay the $300... for as often as I drive the truck I could prolly just throw outa state plates on it as well :D errr i guess that'd make 3 choices :marchmellow:

p.s. i really like that marchmellow guy

p.s.s. I forgot... aboot 10 years back...got my 77 cruiser to smog... after it was deemed a gross polluter... just by throwin some big cats on there... (and a new egr valve).... I think if you just put some functional cats on there they'd never know what the heck :S .... then again... i'm by no means a smog expert....

I'm staying in ootah

The laws are just nonsensical...here in Illinois, depends on what county you live in...some have testing some do not...go figure...I guess the pollution is like a homing pidgin, goes back to your home county.

Then in some of the counties all you have to do is pass the CEL test...in others, they have the sniff test too...

Sorry this is all a way to pad the pockets of someone, have a job for someone's son, or make sure the land lease for these facilities continues to roll into someone's bank account.
