I attended a local PTA meeting last week, the purpose of which was to discuss the current crisis with California's budget.

The schools are being raped by the Governor and the legislature. Money is being taken away from schools at an alarming rate.

Our school district is relatively small in comparison of other school districts in California. There are approximately 22,000 students from what I've been able to gather.

Well, next years budget includes a reduction of 9.1 million dollars for our school district. There will be school closures and teacher layoffs.

To be honest, this really bugs me. If we don't invest in our children's futures now, we will pay for it later.

California spends an ungodly amount of money each year on our prison system. If we were to just release non-violent drug offenders we would probably be able to increase spending on schools, rather than reduce it.

To me, it just makes sense. As the gap increases between corrections spending and education spending, it will only get worse. Without a proper education the odds of a kid ending up in prison only increases. So then, we have to spend even more on corrections, and less on education. Where does it end?

I implore any California residents to write your state representatives. They need to know that this is unacceptable to all of us.

Here's the problem I have with the calif schools
1: what % of the cash gets to the teachers/students?? from what I've heard it's @ 40%... that's unacceptable..
2: The tenure system is ridiculous and needs to be done away with
3: The teachers need to be paid based on job performance <like any other job>

I can keep going on this list... the problem isn't that they don't have enough money.... the problem is they MIS-spend what they already have...

we've got a bunch of HACKS running this state....

I dunno maybe I've been listening to John & Ken too long (kfi640 3-7:p )... but seriously this state is in big trouble....

Cali should do what Arizona did... make it illegal to be illegal... that'll help our budget out by a few hundred million.... and that's being nice ... may be save a few schools & hospitals in the process.....

Bob... we agree there's an issue... :D

I won't try to defend the way that they spend money. But I guarantee that this whole 9.1 million that comes out of this district will impact the kids.

There aren't going to be any administrator layoffs or pay cuts, you can bet your left nut on that. This money is going to come straight out of the classrooms.

I have seriously thought about pulling my kid out and homeschooling him. The issue I have with that is the socialization skills he would miss out on. I think all kids need that. If I could figure out that part of the equation the answer would be simple for me.

well look at the bright side... atleast you're not in LAUSD.... which i can pretty much guarantee is more f'ed up that any of the OC ones.....

I worked for Irvine Unified for a short time several years ago... seemed like they had their act pertty much together..

We've got Tony <villar> tryin to mess things up .... that combined with the guhvanator = bad juju......

let's place our bets now... how much more debt ahnold can get us into

This is the Lake Elsinore school district. Not a whole lot of political pull in this area, so it wouldn't surprise me to find out that the cuts here were higher in terms of percentage than a lot of other districts in the state.

The whole state is a mess though. And I have zero confidence in our elected officials to make it any better.

you live in Lake Smellsomemore?? just kidding... I saw a AAA baseball game out there a while back... lol..... <maybe it was AA I don't remember>

anyway yeah... I agree our elected hacks aren't worth too much...

Additionally I used to do fund raisers for the LA schools district. We used to film school events then edit them. The school would sell them for $10 - $20 and get 100% of the money. This happened for years until the school district decided that selling DVD's without the permission of each and every person that was on the DVD was not allowed so therefore they stopped this fundraising idea.

The school system needs a serious overhaul. I wonder what is in store for the school districts in the near future?

Canyon Lake, same exit as the stadium, just in the other direction. Great place to watch baseball, and it doesn't cost you $200 to take the family.

Lets not forget the burden on those that are here doing the jobs that we don't want to do...........................(I hate that saying). Taking up space in those jails that we don't want to take......................... Stealing our money to go to those school that we didn't need anyways..............................

I feel your pain brother!
