Got the Caltracs on today....they are great. However, they sent the wrong nuts for the U bolts and I had to go get the right ones. PIA. And the instructions are for a basic rear end and not the SRT. So have fun figuring out what to do with the brass plates (spacers):D :D :D Anybody else run into this?:dontknow:

Pics to come.

must be a QC thing:dontknow: :dontknow: :dontknow:

Maybe Tony will chime in, mine are due to be delivered today, so this will be nice to know........

brass plate spacers? not sure on that?

they are a pretty basic install, you get a plate for the bottom ofthe leaf springs, new u bolts, the bar going to the front, a new pivot for the front, and a bushing to go into the front eyelet of the leaf springs,

let me pull out a set, I really dont remember a brass anything:confused:

Sorry, it's anodized colored (brass colored). Nowhere in the instructions sent does it tell you what to do with them. They are about 3"x6" with a hole in the middle and little less than half an inch thick.

I put her back in storage temporarily...we had a little snow and my road is still pretty muddy but I'm off this weekend and will crawl back under there and take some pics. Maybe you guys can look at it and tell me if we screwed it up. It looks right and runs right down the road but now I have some doubts. Thanks for your time guys. Sure hope I don't have to do it again......whew!

Putten mine on next week, I'll be watching this thread ....

Caltrac Weirdness Update

So here is a little update on the Caltrac process, bear in mind it's a QC:

1. You have to replace the top U bolt plate with the anodized plate supplied with the bars..it doesn't look stable like the factory plate but it is. It doesn't tell you anywhere in the instructions to do this.

2. When we tightened the bars like the instructions say and put it back on the ground it was about 4 inches higher in the ass than it was :D Looked like a sixties idea of cool when you put shackles on your rear leaf springs to raise it up:dontknow: :dontknow: :dontknow: :D :D

3. We adjusted the bars to take off all the stress and then turned them 1 turn, and everything looked cool. Drove well, burned out straight (sweet) and was just what I thought it should be.

4. Brought the truck home from storage last Saturday and when I got to my rough road I'm hearing a big clank/clunk from time to time...so I take the old Caltrac box and crap out thinking that was the problem....it wasn't, it was the Caltracs, specifically the rocker on the front of the Caltracs (see pic).

5. So several adjustments later the lowest I could go on turns was 1.5 and not get the clunk when the springs reloaded on a rough road. You will probably only rarely hear this clunk at one turn on smooth roads or even a bump or two. It only happens on a double bump if that makes sense.

This is the anodized plate you put on in place of the stock one.

This is the stock one - looks a lot more stable

This is the rocker. Where it sits on top of the spring is where it bangs when the springs unload if you don't have the Caltracs tight enough.

So, I went back to the shop (yes, I worked in their shop with them and have a hernia to prove it, want pics of that too???:D ) and we experimented with different levels of tight from 1 to 3 turns in half turn increments. Too tight the rear end starts to rise, too loose it clunks on rough roads. So I ended up with 1.5 turns a happy medium with little or no elevation of the ass end, it's too high stock anyway. So, I hope this helps someone with a quad cab thinking of doing Caltracs. And despite what some have said in other posts, suck it up cause it ain't no piece of cake. Plan on a whole day or let the pros do it cause it's a grunt in spots. And for God's sake get a press or access to one, burning the old ones out is a last ditch option for too many reasons to go into here. Good Luck!!!!

Okay old man. In the mean time, am I okay running without that top plate? I finally got around to adjusting them this weekend. turn and a quarter and all seems okay.

They should have been in the bag with all the hardware. If you don't have them I'll look when I get home.

Cruster, did you get a chance to make a pass move (hit the gas and switch lanes to pass a car ahead)? I have had the rear axle get squirrelly twice doing this maneuver. Not into burn-outs, for me its more about high speed stability of the rear.

Thats funny, ive never heard of anyone having issues with caltracs...it was on my to do list soon!

Well as a matter of fact I was just working on this strangeness today. I actually noticed an improvement in the way our trucks rabbit hunt on roads with a "ditch" . You know, like a road that 18 wheelers travel all the time has "ruts" in the pavement. So, at reasonable speed if you are not whipping the steering around I felt a slight improvement in stability. Today I was driving down the Bitterroot south of Missoula on the worst rutted 2 lane road around, everyone hates it and it's been the cause of more than one accident because the ruts in the asphalt are so bad. I got frustrated with a creeper that was in front of me and punched it pretty good to go around and whipped into the left lane to pass....boy did I get a shock....the ass end was all over the place. Seemed worse than stock but like I said this is one of the worst roads around and it could have been just that. I didn't feel I was gonna lose it but it made my adrenaline pump a bit. This was at about 70mph and climbing when I did it. So after I got on a stretch of new road I tried changing lanes several times under power like before. I definitely noticed an increased tendency of the rear corners to dip and come back then get worse if I oversteered or changed direction back rapidly. I'm gonna try tightening the caltracks another half turn and see what happens. This is a guess but I think the rocker on the front is still the culprit, and I think it lets the springs flex more in the opposite direction from torque and let's it bounce more than it did. Like I said, just a guess. Still trying to reason it out and any input would be welcome. But still, even with a different feel at those speeds, the improved stability in a burn is more than noticeable and it definitely hooks up better...jumps off the line now, where there was a little hesitation before. So, I'll dig around and also wait for some of the salts to chime in and see if someone's got the 411 on this. Long as I don't do the video rollover I guess it's cool:D :D :D :D :D

Don't let this deter you....it ain't THAT big a deal as long as you are aware of it and I still think it's an adjustment issue, not a flaw, but we'll see. Gonna write a note to the Caltrac people and see what I get from them.
