CAT (caterpillar) oil filter

From my research, Fram is owned by PGI NorthStar (parent company premium guard) based out of Memphis. They acquired Fram from bankruptcy along with 12 other aftermarket manufacturers including autolite, trico and several others. Amsoil outsources to Donaldson and champion laboratories…. Donaldson is also sourced to CAT in partnership. Is Amsoil a rebranded CAT filter? Hmmm. I think I’m gonna start cutting open some of my own filters and see how much metal they collect compared to some of the smaller CAT filters I pull off various equipment. Compare the internals. Seems how I’m changing the oil on my truck today, I’ll start with the K&N first. I do know Fram had glue issues with the cardboard inside the filter coming apart and starving engines of oil. I know K&N has the same issue as well, but from what I have read it’s been taken care of. I do not know when Fram was sold so I don’t know if the cardboard/adhesive issue has been resolved in sure it probably has as this was years ago as well may possibly be why they went bankrupt…. Again I have no idea. Further research might tell. If any of the info. I find is wrong please politely enlighten me lol. I hate receiving wrong info, and I do NOT want to spread false info around like a Jackass.

Yeah who knows what will happen from bankruptcy, https://bobistheoilguy.com/ is still the main source for all things oil related. I *think* Fram canceled the Titanium line (Advanced Auto exclusive) and Synthetic Endurance is a Walmart exclusive, but has been pulled from some stores. I can still order Synthetic Endurance through Walmart.com though.

There's a new version of Viper filters 5037836AC released in the past few months. I'm not sure if they've changed anything on the inside of filters. 5037836AB can still be found lots of places.

I just got two 836AB filters from Amazon today. They updated something if it’s now AC. I’m always seeing on FB about how others can’t get the 836AB even from dealers it’s on BO. Some are die hard and have to have the 836 or it’s the end of the world lol. Mobil 1 makes a great filter, and oil. Ams oil is good, very expensive. Used to used 0W50 signature series in my ex wife’s GT500. Expensive oil change, twice a year. I’ve always been more of a Valvoline guy. But I do run Shell rotella 15w40 diesel oil in all my small engines and motorcycles. This isn’t the first time bobistheoilguy has popped up lol. Very informative site for sure.

Oil and Filters is always a popular topic. I'm glad to see people jumping in with their own experiences.
That makes it seem like an active forum again.
I was surprised by all the responses it’s gotten. I like to learn what others use, and horror stories. I used to use Fram filters years ago late 90s very early 2000s and just got away from them for no particular reason. I know old timers that swear by them, never had a bad thing to say about them. But after the horror stories and seeing them opened up, I’ll never use them again. But old info. Maybe Fram has stepped up and gotten away from the cardboard and paper element. Companies being bought and sold, changing suppliers, advances in technology. What has changed and what hasn’t over the years. Can’t never learn too much. But it’s the atmosphere that mages it enjoyable, I’ve been on forums that is all name calling and nothing being resolved, and I’ve been on forums where we all learn from each other and problems get resolved. Solving the problem and learning is what I find enjoyable having fun along the way is a plus.

Well said!

The big one for me is to use quality oil and don't keep it in there too long. I've never much cared about the oil filters, because I don't give them much of a workout anyway as they aren't on there for long. And I use a well designed catch can which captures even more nasties.

WIX has worked fine for me over the past 58+ years of doing this stuff.

As long as the can is strong enough to keep the oil INSIDE the engine. :)

As for Forums, people often disagree, which is fine as long as it remains on the productive side.

I try to be thorough in most responses (maybe to the point of seeming "preachy").
But it's a public forum so use/agree with the info or don't, it doesn't matter to me.

My nephew runs a reputable shop and he told me he won't use Fram because of the innards but he does use MANN so maybe they are worth looking into?
