Hey folks, I got a problem on my hands.. A while back I installed some
B&B long tubes with catless mid-pipes and a magnaflow. Well, in VA we
have emissions inspection and i'm over due. I'm trying to order some
catalytic converters to get installed at a shop but i keep reading that
some cats don't remove as much emissions as others, and if i were to
order one of these 'lesser' cats, then i would fail emissions testing..
And why did our trucks orginally come with four? catalytic converters?
or are there two and the other two lumps are just for grins? I need some
pointers as to what cats i should buy. Cheaper the better as this is
just to pass inspections.. soon as i pass i plan on putting in the strait
pipes again :D :burnout:

Thanks,

Andrew

Pm Iron head he has an extra set

Does VA plug into the system or do they do a visional?....If they just plug in you will probably pass if your CEL is not coming on....:dontknow:

that's the thing.. I'm not sure if VA does the plug or the sniffer.. I've heard
multiple things from multiple people and i'm not sure what to believe.
I think what i'm gonna do is go get it tested to find out if VA uses the
sniffer or not. If i fail i get 30 days to fix the problem. Then i'll get
cats etc etc.. But do catalytic converters vary from company to company
as far as emissions removal go? and are there different strengths of
emissions removing material regarding catalytic converters? or are all
cats created equally? and will two cats from jegs welded in place let me
pass emissions if they do sniff? Oh btw i have all the stock exhaust parts
i just don't want to spend a few days swapping exhaust systems... :)

Thanks,

Andrew

i know B&B makes a set of high flows. that would be the quickest and easiest way of taking on and off.

In Tennessee it is just a visual and if there is a converter under there you are good, but they also plug in to your computer and it must pass 4 of the 5 tests. If it is 1995 or older they do a sniff test.

pm hot ram he lives in Va, he can help

its not a problem just go to a muffler shop, have them make you a set of cheap mids with cats, that jsut bolt an unbolt

Depends on the county Jack....we dont have any checks in Sullivan county....they lowered the speed limit on I-81 instead...:dontknow: :)

why not just pay the guy to make it pass that way you save some money and all the hassle of removing everyting and then putting it back on jmho.

Thanks for the suggestions guys. The way i have my exhaust setup now
i can't really swap out pipes. See the B&B midpipes don't have flanges
muffler end and they didn't quite match up to the magnaflow anyway. So
i went to the shop to have a guy weld me some pipe connecting the mids
to the muffler. So if i do actually need to get a sniff test i'm better
off buying some cats then having the guy weld flanges on that and
have him cut some pipe out so i can bolt them in. then have the pipe he
cuts out fitted with flanges so i can bolt them back in... Kind of a hassle
but not too bad.. But if i buy two run of the mill cats will i be passing or
not? or is there not enough information to determine the outcome?

Thanks for the help guys,

Andrew

all of my possibilities before i start bribein people. :D

Just go ahead and drive it thru, they will take your 10 bucks and tell you exactly what you need to pass.

lmfao thanks moparracing. If you look on the second page you can
actually see a post i made at the time ;) I think i'm just gonna drive
it through. I'm gonna order cats just to be safe though. :)

Thanks

Andrew
