Okay, need some opinions from the gearheads. As some may have read already, I made the stupid mistake of trying to launch at over 3500 rpms (track was hooking pretty good but my 60's were still too low). :p

Anyhow I smoked the clutch some but got off the throttle immediately. I let it cool down and didn't make any more passes. Clutch still seems to grab well on the ride home.

I took the beast out again yesterday and it is still grabbing good. No slippage whatsoever. I hammered it a couple of times to be sure and NO slip. I did have just a little bit of burnt smell again when I got her home and I get just a very slight amount of shudder on a normal take off.

So, my questions for the gearheads are...
1. Is the repeat of burning smell just the hot spots burning off?
2. Will the slight shudder go away as the hot spots burn off?
3. Am I still going to be okay with this clutch or will it go downhill from here and have to be replaced?

Thx.

1. Most likely the smell is left over residue putting off odor when hot or heating up.

2. Hot spots on the flywheel will never burn away. Will need to resurface flywheel.

3. It all depends how hard you work the clutch from now on. If it’s is not slipping under load just keep driving her until it’s gone. Then go with upgraded assembly including flywheel or have the flywheel resurfaced and reuse.

I was never "able" to launched at 3500....
I had my clutch turn into shit whan she was almost toasted, similar scenario. I believe I had a few reverse issues too when she got hot. Never any chatter.
However once cooled down ran "fine".
I had 6400 miles on her about then.
Made it to 7K and the master/slave went. Because there were those "moments" when you had to give it to her.

Made it to ROE the next week....when they pulled the clutch / flywheel out....toasted.

After the new set up...unbelievable difference...

Stock flywheel after removal...

I do not have a better pic of the clutch.
There was a "abrasion" on the face of the flywheel @ 2:00...in the shadow
that was well into the flywheel.

Hope it helps you out.:D

Did you slip the clutch at 3500 or dump it? I never slip it anymore with the new clutch/flywheel combo.

I agree with NBT, the package from ROE is the shiiiit!

Im assuming he slipped it....better to drop it then to slip it

Agreed...I learned the hard way...slipped the shit out of the stocker.... but did cut a 1.9 sixty with it... cost me though....
Now I just drop it with the Centerforce... pedal is so easy now with the master / slave upgrade.

No discussion , your clutch is shit , gone, finito!

unless you are going to drive it around like grandpa jones, jsut go ahead and replace it.

It probably wont take anymore launches at all.

On all previous run I was just dumping it and had no problems.

I tried to just slip a little bit on this run (yeah I know, bad idea) and it didn't hold. I am just out of the 12 month clutch warranty too, looks like I will have to suck it up on this one.

:(

Can I get clarification on this:

By "dumping" the clutch do you mean removing your foot from the clutch in an immediate manner, and by "slipping" the clutch you release the pedal in a gradual manner? This is a little confusing for me. I dont like the immediate removal of the clutch pedal while in gear because I would hear a "clunk" from somewhere, kinda worries me.

Yes. Dumping it is letting it all the way out very fast.

Slipping it is letting it our real slow to avoid spinning (very bad for our clutches on a hard launch).

yes slipping is where you release the clutch while depressing the accelerator at the same time

dumping it is holding the pedal to a certain rpm and releasing the clutch pedal.

What happened with vipers is it allready had wear from previous runs, and possibley a liitle warm.

When he released the pedal the pressure plate slammed the disc up against the flywheel , which the stock pressure plate doesnt have enough pressure so the disc slipped against the flywheel causing burn marks.

this is also because of more hp than stock also, stock clutches were not designed for power launches too often.

This weekend I will probably dump the clutch, assuming this is the best way to start at the line. So intervals of 15-20 minutes between runs shouldn't be too bad, yes?

I was letting mine cool down to about 160 between runs (coolant and oil). I just wouldn't recommend launching at anything above 3000 rpms. I had no trouble up to that point.;)

A good rule of thumb is to make a run, pit, raise hood, put a fan on , get a beer or two:D so basically at least 20-30 minutes.

Every truck is different, but for me, (and i'm no expert my any means)

I staged at 1500rpm then dumped (popped) the clutch and got almost 100% traction with slight bog (18's mind you). Then due to the bog, I upped it to 2k and then got terrible traction. I think it was due to me being in a "lesser-prepped" lane though.

Needless to say, pop it at 1500, then 2000, and find your sweet point

When I burned mine up I was launching at about 3k. I never launched above that and she still went up in smoke. Stinker is correct, stocker was never designed to handle very many power launches at all.

Ditto what NBT says!

Roe put in the Centerforce clutch, master/slave and Fidanza, and all I have now is grab...my stock stuff was going south at 9k.

Update:

I don't think I did any permanent damage. I went out and did some more testing last night. Didn't do any hole shots, but I hammered it from a slow rolling start several times. No slippage whatsoever, grabbed rubber on the 2nd, 3rd and 4th gear shifts. No smell this time either. I think I just needed to wear off the hot spot. Shifting and grabbing like new again now.
